International reviewer: The Doric is a must do pub/restaurant in Edinburgh's old town. Just a short walk down from the castle, it's a great place for a meal during the day or in the evening after you've been seeing the sights. Great staff, food and drinks. You will need to book if you want a meal as it's popular for a reason. Cozy in winter, you can get a cute view from the second floor restaurant while you munch. Price wise it's all very reasonable, but be warned a main will be enough for most normal eaters the starters are delicious but unless you're a big eater a main and a starter may be too much. This is important because the desert menu is delicious see, sticky toffee pudding and you'll want to have room for it. You have a great range of local and imported drinks - we appreciated the local ales they had available at the time. They can also fix you most spirits and even have a delicious cocktail range. Specials rotate daily so they're always worth a look. We'll be back on our next trip for sure. Dietary restrictions: Staff were easily able to provide gluten free options.
Highly recommend but make sure you get a reservation! We were lucky enough to snag two seats because of a cancellation Food is fabulous .. along with the staff!! They have one chef who focuses on quality!!! Therefore limited seating.. After dinner Make your way downstairs for local music entertainment!
Stopped in for lunch. Pub is downstairs. Restaurant is up. Around 2 pm we were just one of 3 tables. Mussels were soo good. Got the burger with salad and chips & was very good. Son loved his shepherds pie. Drinks are affordable and huge selection. Staff wasn’t too speedy but have to remember things are slow moving down here. No place to leave tip with credit and didn’t have cash but I hear that’s the way it is around here so that’s how it went. Nice window view to see some of the city.
We went to get haggis and shepherds pie. Turns out I don't like ale. But lovely place.Food: 5/5
Great food! Old pub, Shepards pie! Haggis bon- bons, yummy! Must have the toffee pudding! Good wait staff to boot!
We had a super family get together here in mid-March. Very friendly and welcoming, and excellent service. Food was, as expected, excellent, with mostly very generous portions. I don’t think any of us managed pudding, but my memory is clouded by quite a lot of the wine… only slight disappointment - lemon sole was apparently delicious, but small…!! Otherwise, top notch. Great location as well, and great if you’re using trains, trams or buses to get there. Loved it!
We came here for dinner to have a Shepherd’s pie, and honestly it was the best pie in the Edinburgh within 15£. I would recommend not going to bistro at the 2nd floor, but rather try to find spot in the pub and enjoy the vibe of place and spontaneous conversations.
Nice place Local food Try Sonday Roast :- Live music friday & Saturday about 8-11 p.m.
The Cullen skink... Oh. My. Word. Just heaven. The mini haggis starter, the mussels, the shepherds pie, the rocket and parmesan salad. A great meal, charming service, unhurried and friendly. Very highly recommended. Dietary restrictions: Really helpful
Great place that I had always wanted to visit, glad I finally did. A proper gastro pub, understated and relaxed atmosphere. We had three courses each and they were all fantastic. I will be back for the Haggis! The bar downstairs finished off a great night with live music we were not expecting.
