I was glad to stop off here overnight on a long drive. It’s a beautiful, grand and intriguing building and reasonably priced. I enjoyed the high ceilings and spacious room, as well as the large windows looking out onto the stunning grounds. It was great to meet Nigel, the site manager, who is clearly passionate about the place and even kindly drove me in the rain to see the Japanese temple. I hope he is able to maintain and preserve this precious and beautiful piece of English history. I would stay again when in the area.nnUpdate: On the second visit, I was given a ground floor room, which was smaller and run down. I asked to be placed back up on the first floor, which the receptionist arranged. I woke up in the night as the TV had turned itself on and got a bit spooked. It then occurred to me I may be one of the only guests in the building. It’s an interesting hotel, but it’s an experience rather than a solid and reliable option. I hope it is cared for better in the future, as the weight of history plus neglect is a heavy combination.
We came here for a business meeting and it was really nice treat. The long driveway through the golf course is interesting, I’m sure a couple of cars have been hit by golf balls when passing through. The meeting room was spacious and the food they provided was good, lots of variety and friendly staff. We went clay pigeon shooting up the hill on the same site as an activity and that was awesome! Would highly recommend that for anyone beginner or experienced. Great place for business meeting, golfing parties or solo or just a nice night away.
Very impressive location however the service on both occasions has fallen short from the moment we arrived. The front desk is vacant for long periods and it continued from there. The saving grace is the value for money.
Donnington Grove was a welcome oasis for a stopover while traveling south. The setting is beautiful and we were given a warm welcome at reception. We'd booked a garden/patio room as we had our dogs with us, which was perfect being able to step straight outside and enjoy one of the many walks around the grounds. The room itself was a little dated and corporate-looking, but clean and perfectly functional. We ate dinner in the bar, which was tasty and good value. Again, the bar area was functional and rather lacking in atmosphere - predominantly set up as a golf 'clubhouse' rather than somewhere to relax in a comfy seat and enjoy a drink. Breakfast was a little chaotic but maybe because we had to sit in the bar area, rather than the restaurant because we had the dogs with us - not really set up for that which meant a bit of running back and forward to get our cutlery, plates and buffet items. Still, the choice was good and my partner's 'cooked to order' Eggs Benedict were delicious. The place could probably benefit from some investment and better decor to play on it's country house potential but, nevertheless, it's great value and you'd be hard pushed to find a more beautiful setting.
Lovely hotel to stay. Stayed for a few days whilst at work. Lovely location with the castle close by - nice woodland area to visit for walks.nThere is very limited telephone service in some of the rooms and room service do not answer.nWas a little weird that I got a call from the receptionist on the morning of checkout before the checkout time asking where I had gone with the key but.. I would visit again.
