We chose this hotel because we know Newbury well and we wanted a hotel close to the town centre. It's a 17th century Inn so we expected some low beams and squeaky floorboards. We like quaint and old so it suited us but it was also clean and comfortable. We had a spacious family room with a large on-suite bathroom with a large shower. The full English breakfast was cooked to order and very enjoyable and the staff were courteous.

We stayed next door at The Chequers but went here for food. It's been refurbished recently and is a great place for a pub meal and some relaxing drinks. Open wood fire, decent ale and a hearty steak, all in an historic pub setting... Decent

Good selection of cider, nice seating with at least two fires. Car park spaces at the back. Nice outdoor seating area.

Old hotel, uncomfortable beds, squeaky floor, breakfasts are ok, service is fine, but the building seems to be falling apart.
