Before I go on, let me explain I am the fussy type and have certain expectations around what I'll be getting, particularly for the price paid. The Dog and Whistle is advertised as a newly refurbished boutique hotel - without doubt you can see this is what has been aimed for but in reality the hotel just does not live up to this - in my view due to a lack of attention for detail. There is no parking at the hotel (as stated on the booking) but you can stop in the taxi rank for a few minutes just outside if you are careful just to drop off the luggage. A minute or twos walk away is a multi-storey car park which is free overnight and only charges you for the time you spend actually parked - pretty good! On arrival, we were checked in relatively rapidly by the barman. We were given keys to the room but the barman was unable to open the door for around 5-10 minutes as he had not been given the right code to get in. On going out later in the evening, we discovered the keys we had been given were the wrong ones - very glad we checked! The room itself was new but the finish was poor. In the bedroom, the light fitting was starting to fall off the ceiling, the skirting board had not been properly finished, the blinds were cheap and did not offer sufficient blocking of light, a second set of frosted windows had no light cover at all, the bed was very soft, only 4 hangers were supplied and the windows rattled in the wind. We were advised that this was because the building was listed and the windows could not be replaced - understandable but something to wedge in them to prevent them rattling would have been useful, along with some pre-warning. We ended up trying to wedge paper at 2am! In the bathroom, the flooring had not been finished by the sink, the enamel had worn away in the toilet bowl and shower flooded the floor very easily and either flowed at a very low rate and a reasonable temperature or at a reasonable rate and a scolding temperature. Some other points: the WiFi did not work for us on either laptop; there was no mention of breakfast and when the bar shuts we were not advised but later found out that there remains a manager on site to support if required. The pub is located near a nightclub and next to a taxi rank so it is fair to say there is some noise but they make it clear in the booking and so we were expecting this. They do provide disposable earplugs if you desire. Overall: it is clean and certainly adequate to stay in. It does not currently live up to the standard of a newly refurbished boutique hotel however. We raised the issues with the manager who promptly refunded our stay so no complaints there. It's a real shame as many bits were right but there were a few too many more minor details that in my view needed fixing to warrant the value.

Great service, delicious food and feel good atmosphere. Big plus is it's one of the few places in Hertford that is dog friendly! Will definitely return!

A quality music venue that's a bit different to the other venues in the area. Musical events throughout the year make it a place you should visit at some point. You will have an enjoyable time.
