Totally amazing what is available here. You do have to book a 2hr slot but hopefully that will change soon. I found so much about the family I'm currently researching and I need to go back. I would highly recommend the Derby Local studies and Family History centre if you have any family members or ancestors from Derby. You can visit even if you don't live or work in Derbyshire.
The local studies library is located in the old Derby Borough Magistrates Court. Quite a bit of the original woodwork is still there including the magistrates bench where you can sit at a computer. The reception area is where the old court dock was located and accused people in custody would be brought up the stairs from the police cells below the court and when sentenced to imprisonment taken down the stairs. Everytime I visit I can still visualise the magistrates clerk of the 1960s named Arthur Exton. He wore a wig and a black gown. Also the court usher who wore a green uniform. If planning a visit then check the opening hours. Very helpful staff. There is lift access.
Brilliant, helpful and knowledgable staff, really excellent place to carry out your research into family history and much more.
