Dean Castle Country Park

Story

Dean Castle is situated in the Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the stronghold for the Boyd Family, who were lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years. The Castle takes its name from ‘The Dean’ or wooded valley, a common place name in Scotland. However, until about 1700 it was called Kilmarnock Castle. Owned originally by the Boyd family, it has strong historical connections with many people and events famous in Scottish history. Robert the Bruce who gave the Boyds these lands; James III of Scotland whose sister married a Boyd; the Covenanters, some of whom were imprisoned here; Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose rebellion was joined by the 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and Robert Burns who was encouraged to publish his poetry by the Earl of Glencairn who owned the Castle at that time.HistoryThe Boyd Family came into possession of the grounds of Dean Castle in 1316, when Sir Robert Boyd was rewarded the lands of Kilmarnock and West Kilbride by King Robert I for his services at the Battle of Bannockburn.KeepThe Keep was built around 1350 by Sir Robert Boyd’s son Sir Thomas Boyd. It was built mainly for defence, the walls are 2–3 metres thick, it has few windows, and the original entrance is high above ground level. There are no arrowslits in the walls of Dean Castle something which is very rare for a Scottish castle of this time period, all of the shooting was done from the battlements at the top.

The visitor centre, recently built offers a cafe with a large variety of sandwiches, snacks, cakes etc and great coffee plus many other choices of drinks. It also has a gift shop, full of interesting bits and pieces for all, especially the kids. It also has a great view, through very large windows of both the castle and park. The park has some great features, the castle of course and a nature visitor centre, sure to catch the interest of kids, let alone the adults. Car parking is good, plenty of space, and sensible pathways for wheelchairs.

Lovely big park, good for walking the dogs around. Has a nice old castle and loads of things to with the kids, The park is currently undergoing a lot of changes and work which will be complete in 2020, So I will update with photos when it is all complete and possibly upgrade the star rateing. As the original park that is now gone was bigger and I would have given 4 stars for it, but I believe the new one will be better! 😎👍

This is a lovely park which is undergoing a transformation. Unfortunately at time of this visit the swing park was being developed so the 5 year old I was with didn't have a lot of fun here. However have been told it will get better. Ranger spoke to us about the ducks and was informative and helpful.

We love heading to Dean castle park. The walks are lovely and the kids have great fun kicking the foot ball or riding there bikes. In the winter when the snow falls. We take the kids down with there sledge and the have a great time playing in the snow and riding the sled on the hills. Thankfully not too steep which helps with younger children. All in all Greta place to visit all year round

Good walking routes, easy to access and decent parking. They are doing some major renovations to the kids area and animal enclosures but still well worth a couple of hours. The cafe is good value and food is decent.
