Dean Castle Country Park

Story

Dean Castle is situated in the Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. It was the stronghold for the Boyd Family, who were lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years. The Castle takes its name from ‘The Dean’ or wooded valley, a common place name in Scotland. However, until about 1700 it was called Kilmarnock Castle. Owned originally by the Boyd family, it has strong historical connections with many people and events famous in Scottish history. Robert the Bruce who gave the Boyds these lands; James III of Scotland whose sister married a Boyd; the Covenanters, some of whom were imprisoned here; Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose rebellion was joined by the 4th Earl of Kilmarnock and Robert Burns who was encouraged to publish his poetry by the Earl of Glencairn who owned the Castle at that time.HistoryThe Boyd Family came into possession of the grounds of Dean Castle in 1316, when Sir Robert Boyd was rewarded the lands of Kilmarnock and West Kilbride by King Robert I for his services at the Battle of Bannockburn.KeepThe Keep was built around 1350 by Sir Robert Boyd’s son Sir Thomas Boyd. It was built mainly for defence, the walls are 2–3 metres thick, it has few windows, and the original entrance is high above ground level. There are no arrowslits in the walls of Dean Castle something which is very rare for a Scottish castle of this time period, all of the shooting was done from the battlements at the top.

Beautiful park with lots of walks, wildlife and only a short distance from the town centre. The castle has been restored with lots of nice new interactive areas and historical items on display. A variety of different farm animals and two ponds within the grounds and a playpark for children. The grounds could be looking much nicer with more picnic areas and wildlife viewing points throughout the park.
This was one of my best experiences in Scotland. This beautiful park and premises of Dean Castle offers a lovely museum which you can walk through the castle, up into different chambers and floors. The docents were very knowledgeable and we had a good conversation with one about this castle and the history of the area. Have a lovely cafe and wildlife in the park. There's a bridge that goes over a running river. The park is children and dog friendly. Even the cafe food and customer service was very nice. I would love to come back to this place once again. I forgot to mention there is no entrance fee.
The castle is an absolute highlight if you like to see recreation of historic life, very high quality renovation to add this free museum/exhibition across two buildings.nnPark has well kept paths that most are easily traversable with prams. And well kept grounds.nnAlso has deer that sit like they are posing for photosnnThe cafe is cheap and cheerful type food wise but welcome and the coffee was pretty decent.nnWill visit again.
Beautiful woodland walks, well preserved castle with interesting exhibits. Great wee cafe with friendly staff. Best of all, loads of wildlife especially the deer, which were really curious and came over to say hi.
