De La Salle School

Story

De La Salle School, St Helens is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive Roman Catholic high school which is linked to the world wide La Sallian community. The school in its current form was created in 1987 after the amalgamation of several Roman Catholic high schools in the area (West Park, Notre Dame, St. Edmund Campion and Mount Carmel). Its trustees are the De La Salle Brothers, who have a House nearby. There are 1200 pupils, and about 140 staff. Seven associated primaries provide the majority of pupils who join, aged 11: Corpus Christi, St. Austin's, St. Bartholomew's, St. John Vianney, St. Julie's, St. Teresa's and St. Thomas of Canterbury.HistoryGrammar schoolsTwo of the former schools were called West Park Grammar School and Notre Dame High School, which were both direct grant grammar schools.ComprehensiveIt became a comprehensive.CampusThe school completed a large building programme in June 2013. Nearly half of the building stock was rebuilt, while almost all of the remainder was substantially remodelled. The new buildings capture some simple principles which the school developed with contractors and St. Helens Council: each academic area is clearly defined, with its own staff base and bespoke I.C.T. provision; while there are some open learning areas, the majority of classrooms are light and airy, as well as being very well sound-proofed; there are many double learning spaces, separated by sound-proofed partitions; each of the school's year groups has its own Base, with social seating for the pupils and I.C.T. areas, the year group leaders are (as of 6/9/17) Year 7 - Michelle Croft, Year 8 - Mark Leggett, Year 9 - Liam O'Callaghan, Year 10 - Catherine Mallalieu and Year 11 - Gareth Fletcher; there are six enclosed and secure external areas, including the spacious Founder's Quad, and Our Lady's Quad, in addition to defined learning areas for Art, Performing Arts, science and Enrichment.

As a former pupil of De La Salle St Helens I have to say I wish I didn't have to give it even one star. I endured the worst three years of my life here before I was given the opportunity to escape, I can safely say bullying is the main issue at this school, from teachers and peers I was constantly told I was stupid by teachers which is hilarious as since I've been told by my new school that I'm way further ahead in my education than I should be, trust me this isn't thanks to De La Salle it's thanks to all the extra tuition I had to have to even pass, the teachers were that awful and inconsistent. Just to end here please please please don't send your children here it WILL condemn them to a lifetime of mental health problems.

I enjoyed 5 unforgettable years at De La Salle and I must admit, I am truly shocked upon reading the other online reviews. Up the La Salle

...This school is just terrible. The teachers punish well behaved students for making one simple mistake or refusing to do a speech in front of a class. I even lost a star point for refusing to play a quiz game! Also, my English teacher made my class write a diary entry for homework (based on "an inspector calls") but it was more of a suicide note describing one of the characters' final thoughts before ending their own life. Yeah, great way to prevent suicides! they also seem to have a bullying problem since it once took them quite a while to deal with people bullying me. This school also has a littering problem. No matter where you are in the place, you will see quite a bit of litter on the ground. They also don't spend much money on art supplies for the art department which saddens me a bit because then I can't paint happy trees! :( The school also recently changed to smoothwall which just blocks every single website and sends an email to the deputy head...So if I want to search for a maths game website (not that I'd actually do that) it would be blocked. Some members of staff here are labelling me with special needs because I don't talk in class and my voice is quiet (most of the time...) The only reason why I am rating it a 2 is because most teachers I have met are genuinely nice people and I would feel a bit mean by rating this school a 1... This school does not steam a good ham! Only send your kids here if you wish to torture them.

This is the worst school in the world. The teachers dont even follow rules and punish people and they sometimes use their phones while teaching lessons and go on social media and dont give the education students need to learn. Very badly behaved students dont get punished enough and their are some really bad pupils who shouldn't be there and always get second chances when they should be expelled and they get rewards for their "improved" behaviour. While very well behaved students dont get rewards and praised for their good work and behaviour and sometimes get punished for absolute no reason. Students also go on their phones during lessons and breaks when they arent surrpose to be on them between 8:30am-3:00pm and teachers dont even take it off them. The school is a distater and a wreck the toilets are the WORST part of the school their is pee all over the floor, there are holes in the walls between the toilets, there is never any soap in the soap boxes to wash hands and the toilets never get cleaned properly. The classrooms look like they are out of a horror movie the blinds are ripped and broken, pen all over walls and tables, rubbish all over the floor, chewing gum under tables and chairs, reading books have be written in and graffiti all over them and they never get cleaned properly. There are so many supply teachers and students end up doing the same work over and over again all week long and they sometimes don't do the work that the proper teacher has set for them. The spear PE kits and bibs from PE never get washed and you don't know where they have been or what bacteria is on them that can cause illness and if they ever do get washed its only once every term. There are students who get ill and have virus and tempruters and saw stomach pains and don't get sent home because the school wants them to have a "good" attendance and this can cause them to get worse and make it spread to other people in the school. They do reward trips at the end of the year and the very bad pupils who DO NOT DESERVE to go end up going while some of the very good pupils who deserve to go don,t end up going. They don't do proper background checks on some teachers because some have been fired for horrid things. Some pupils get mental health problems and it can affect who they are and make they not feel like the person they were and make them feel depressed because of other pupils being mean to them. Pupils have to wait weeks for new books and use paper and sometimes they get the wrong type of books. I can now see why the school got "special measures" from ofsted 3 years ago. Im giving the school a 1 raiting becuase their are more bad things about the school than good. Please dont send your kids here it will cause a life time of mental health problems and will the school even change.

Decent school, however it lacks any consistency. Punishments and rewards seem too unstable to seem noteworthy. It all depends on the teacher and their mood, not your performance in a given class. Also some teachers really need to learn how to control a class.
