Story

West Lancashire Microlight School has been established for over 20 years and is the North West’s leading microlight training facility, offering low cost training and flying the latest generation microlight aircraft. The school is open 6 days a week.

Operated by Carl Bayliss from a private airfield at Ince Blundell, we are in the perfect location for training, being just 2 miles from the coast and having the pleasure of a predominantly smooth westerly wind.

We have stunning local scenery and are within easy reach of North Wales, the Fylde coastline and the Lake District.

We offer training, trial flights, ground school, maintenance, PPL hire as well as a number of other services.

Operating from a private airfield means we spend more time flying and less time waiting for traffic on the ground. It also allows a professional but relaxed training environment.

I recently converted from Group A flying at a large ATC controlled airport, and it's the best thing I've done for my flying. The Ikarus is amazing and has great availability with online calendar booking and I often fly on the off-chance as well. The airfield is great - challenging but adequate runways and you're always more or less into wind with the options. I can't think of a more cost effective and fun way to fly, all whilst maintaining an SEP rating thats still valid for Group A.  There's a good humoured club atmosphere, with all the facilities you'd need - I'd recommend both for new students, and seasoned flyers that want the grass roots experience and to have the freedom that you just can't get flying off tarmac.

I bought a 20 min flying experience voucher for my dad and I for fathers day earlier this year.  We both flew today and thoroughly enjoyed it. The microlight looked very new and the flight was fantastic.  The weather was great, so we managed to spot blackpool, the isle of mann, anglesea, widnes and manchester during the flight. The pilot gave a fab commentary all the way around.  My dad wants us to visit there again which basically says it all!

After a lot of cancellations due to weather finally got up there and I can only say it was 100% worth the wait. I Went up for "pleasure flight" not lesson. Carl was superb, always putting mind at ease keeping you informed of all actions as he was doing them even though I personally felt comfortable, perhaps others won't.  I felt safe and comfortable at all times. Based in a Great location as you will have stunning views whichever direction you travel in. Thoroughly recommended and I will definitely be making a return visit in the near future!! Thanks Carl!!

I bought a voucher for my partner last year and she finally got around to using it today. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would love to go again. Carl was brilliant, explained everything very clearly, friendly and ensured she was comfortable throughout the flight. Would definitely recommend!

Me and my dad both had a flight recently and both really enjoyed it. Been to this flying site before a couple of times and have always enjoyed the experience. Carl is both friendly and professional and clearly knows the aircraft well. He is very clear when explaining how to operate the aircraft. Excellent tuition. We cannot wait to go back for more flying lessons. Nothing was too much trouble for Carl and the people on the airfield are all very friendly and approachable. Good location too. If wanting to learn to fly, would definitely recommend West Lancs.

Very disappointing. Bought a 2 hour voucher as a gift. Each booking was cancelled due to bad weather even though one of the days booked was a lovely sunny day. The voucher eventually expired but the online booking system still let us go ahead and book, fortunately it was cancelled again as they informed us we would have been turned away. Person I spoke to was very unhelpful, didnt like his attitude. No refund offered and was just not prepared to help in any way. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

I could not recommend WLMS highly enough! I had a fantastic flight today, with a total star of a pilot, who put me completely at ease with his flying skill & his commentary you know exactly where you are, what you're flying over, and what to expect... Everyone should do this...:

For a Birthday present a few years back I was given the opportunity to fly in a light aircraft local to where I live. I enjoyed the experience of flying low around the Wirral and Liverpool so much even taking control myself that I booked a flying lesson the following week. You can book a lesson or experience directly on their website. You're given a phone number to call on the day to check weather suitability. My flight instructor, Carl is very approachable and will talk you through any questions you have. Learning to fly is obviously going to be a challenge and can be mentally draining at times but Carl is very forgiving and always remembers the days of himself being a student. His ability, confidence and teaching method passes over to the student quickly so you feel relaxed and comfortable taking information. There is also a club house at WLMS. Getting to meet other student pilots,  exchanging numbers, becoming friends and helping each other out to achieve that goal is a major plus point of the school. I got my Private Pilots Licence around 2 years after my first lesson. The lessons were made a pleasure by Carl and the team and I couldn't thank them enough. What seemed a long shot turned into a reality.  Thank you WLMS.

Loved it, fantastic experience and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The views were amazing. these things are like a go-cart but in the air and the sensation of being open to the elements was mind blowing

Appalling. Brought a flight for a special occasion only to have it cancelled on at least 4 separate occasions no problem with this as these things happen. Emailed repeatedly to get an extension with no reply and when they finally pick up the phone was told that no further extensions would be made and the money was gone. In other words a complete rip off. I am not the only one who has experienced this. The person on the phone was also very unpleasant. 1 star is one too many.
