A truelly amazing experience. A great example of a Victorian fort. Amazing tunnels to explore with history to take you back to a bygone Era. We stayed for 3 nights and had the entire place to ourselves. Go to the landmark trust website for more info.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Had a fantastic time at the Open day exploring all that the Fort has to offer. Very informative tours and walks. Highly recommended Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We attended open day at Crownhill fort. It was good, just a shame we didn't know about getting the bands for tunnels tour. Hopefully we can see them next time.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Our second time here at the fort, being an ex RE I found the history behind it and the construction of it explained how it actually worked. The collection of arty pieces was fascinating too, Moncrieffs disappearing gun, a unique in the world, example of excellence in design to solve a real problem. The fort is in great condition overall with subterranean tunnels leading to gun emplacements best accessed in the evenings when you have the entire place to yourself. The accommodation is old world Victorian/Edwardian style with a superb kitchen with everything you could possibly need.
Our best preserved and looked after fort of many in my home town and a fascinating place to visit
This early Victorian Fort, operated by the Landmark Trust, is well worth making an effort to visit. They have open days throughout the year, but it is not open on a daily basis. They have live firing of cannons and rifles all using blanks of course. There are tunnels and rooms aplenty, and two barrack rooms are presented in the 1890's and 1940's style. There are toilets but no catering facilities as such. They even have volunteers who dress up in Victorian clothing. UPDATE: Since posting this, CF now have catering. These are usually outside suppliers who operate from purpose built vans.
Lovely visit today never been before and I live next door to it. Well worth a visit, hard to know when it is open. Opening times may be on landmark trust Web site take drinks and food
For your information I was based there in 1968 to 1971 with Strategic Command HQ and Signal Squadron. Our REME unit attached to the Signal squadron to maintain the radio vehicles and trucks. Our workshops were at Coypool further down the A38 but now retail parks and industrial estates. Our accommodation was at Plumer Barracks now flats and houses Plumer House a bit further down the road. All our high power radio equipment was used here as the fort was easy to keep secure. I can tell you that when on rota night guard duty it was eerie for two of us as we wander through the tunnels and check the offices are secure. Brings back memories. I must visit one day and see if I can mremeber where anything was back then
What a gem! It is staffed by marvellously well informed volunteers and is exceptionally good value as a tour and as a place to stay.
Recommend anyone taking advantage of any open days they have coming up such a great piece of Plymouth's history right on our door step
