Story

The Royal National Theatre in London is one of the United Kingdom's three most prominent publicly funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House. Internationally, it is known as the National Theatre of Great Britain. From its foundation in 1963 until 1976, the company was based at the Old Vic theatre in Waterloo. The current building was designed by architects Sir Denys Lasdun and Peter Softley and structural engineers Flint & Neill and contains three stages, which opened individually between 1976 and 1977. It is located next to the Thames in the South Bank area of central London. In addition to performances at the National Theatre building, the National Theatre company tours productions at theatres across the United Kingdom.Since 1988, the theatre has been permitted to call itself the Royal National Theatre, but the full title is rarely used. The theatre presents a varied programme, including Shakespeare and other international classic drama; and new plays by contemporary playwrights. Each auditorium in the theatre can run up to three shows in repertoire, thus further widening the number of plays which can be put on during any one season. In June 2009, the theatre began National Theatre Live , a programme of simulcasts of live productions to cinemas, first in the United Kingdom and then internationally. The programme began with a production of Phèdre, starring Helen Mirren, which was screened live in 70 cinemas across the UK. NT Live productions have since been broadcast to over 700 venues in 22 countries around the world.

The National Theatre – what a gem! My partner and I had the pleasure of seeing A Tupperware of Ashes, written by the fantastic Tanika Gupta, and starring none other than Meera Syal – yes, the Meera Syal, the queen from Goodness Gracious Me who we all grew up with, now gracing the stage with all her legendary brilliance. The venue was cozy, with room for maybe 250 - 300 people, and thankfully enough seating that you don’t have to awkwardly elbow a stranger for armrest supremacy. Plenty of leg room : Now, about the play. Honestly, it’s an emotional rollercoaster – imagine crying, laughing, and then wondering if you can do both at the same time. Syal’s acting? Wow. Let’s just say I’ve never seen so many facial expressions in one sitting. She could’ve recited the phone book and we would’ve been enthralled. It’s an intense story about aging, guilt, family bonds and the challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer. We left with puffy eyes and full hearts, already Googling the next show. Highly recommend it, unless you’re allergic to brilliant acting and raw human emotions. In that case, maybe stay home with your own Tupperware full of tissues. #atupperwareofashes #theatre #london #dorfmantheatre
Excellent theatre and not really a bad seat in the house. BB1 stated restricted view but for Hot Wing King it was excellent being so close and didn’t miss a thing. Great food and drink options nearby too.
The Dorfman Theatre is located in a vibrant and lively part of London, near iconic landmarks like the London Eye, with plenty of nearby eateries to choose from before or after the show. The venue itself offers a comfortable and intimate experience. We sat in the PIT area, which provided excellent views of the stage, allowing us to really immerse ourselves in the performance. The staff and security were friendly and welcoming, adding to the positive atmosphere. However, the inflated prices for beverages were a bit of a disappointment. Despite that, it was overall a fantastic night out.
Superb space for a more personal experience. Sound, lighting and stage production were so enhancing to the play that was performed. Congratulations to 'A tubberware of ashes' for a truly wonderful theatre experience.
Great little theatre You can get drinks at the interval but they don't sell hot drinks - with the weather becoming colder this is the only downfall. Otherwise watching the hot wing king was excellent, such a funny play.
Great little theatre. Stands out with its modern productions. The amenities are quite basic. Cosy and simple, makes for a nice night out. Plenty of venues for drinks and food are around.
An adjunct to The National Theatre, but nothless an excellent stage area and auditorium. Staff helpful and friendly. Show. Dixon and Daughters, excellent. Very challenging subject areas. Well presented by the cast. An all female cast welcoming the mother back home after a prison cell. All the cast are excellent, Liz White and Andrea Lowe. But especially the young actor playing the daughter held her stage prescence with the more well known names .
Marvellous venue you are really in the performance at any level. It’s round the corner from the main NT entrance but the security there aren’t overly helpful in finding it. Pictures from top level all seats had good views but in the bottom you are almost show of the show.
I went to see Grenfell in the words of survivors. It was a very good play. The space in the small Dorfman theatre was used really well. Recommended!
Lovely theatre. We got restricted seats/Circle-High seats closest to the stageP62/63. There was no problem at all, indeed, was perfect that we could enjoy watch the backstage as well. The Great Wave was fantastic
