Story

The Chesil Rectory is a relaxed and informal restaurant serving honest, exceptional, robust, British classics. Located in a unique, historic Grade II listed building dating back to 1450, the restaurant still has many original features including solid oak beams, ancient doorways and beautiful open fireplaces. It is the oldest house in Winchester having been bequeathed to the city by Mary Tudor, no less!

Our Head Chef, Damian Brown, uses fresh ingredients and quality local produce to create simple, delicious classics.

The restaurant has been totally refurbished and features deep button banquette seating, quirky antiques and vintage chandeliers whilst retaining all its authentic charm. Exciting new additions to the original restaurant include a comfy lounge area and a sumptuous private dining room for up to 12 people.

Stylish, relaxed and intimate, the restaurant now offers Sunday roasts, early supper, lunch and dinner, feasting menus and private dining.

Went here with wife and a couple of friends. Food was lovely as was the wine. Cocktails were also good. We did however have a 45 minute wait for a table that was booked weeks in advance and the service while waiting was pretty poor, which did take the edge off the overall experience. Did add a couple of photos of the food but I'd already started eating before taking photos because we were that hungry from the wait
I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Chesil Rectory in Winchester, and I must say it was a delightful experience from start to finish. It was the pea and mint soup as a starter, accompanied by their delicious homemade bread. Be warned—the soup portion is surprisingly large for a starter, but it was so flavourful that I couldn’t possibly complain. The freshness of the peas, paired with the subtle mint undertone, created a vibrant and refreshing dish. For mains, it was the seabream and their homemade gnocchi. Both dishes were beautifully presented and equally satisfying. The seabream was perfectly cooked, light, and delicate. The gnocchi, however, stole the show—rich, pillowy, and just the right balance of flavours. Had it not been for the substantial starter, I might have gone for a second portion! The service was another highlight of the evening. The staff were warm, friendly, and extremely attentive without being intrusive. They make one feel welcome and ensure you have everything you needed throughout your meal. To top it all off, the restaurant itself is set in a quaint, historic building, which adds to the charm of the experience. It’s easily accessible and offers a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxed dinner. Overall, I highly recommend The Chesil Rectory for anyone seeking delicious food, excellent service, and a memorable dining experience in Winchester.
The food was nothing short of spectacular. Perfectly prepared, perfectly seasoned and perfectly presented by the chef and his team at the Chesil Rectory. Thank you so much for a wonderful dining experience!!!Food: 5/5
The restaurant is lovely, with contemporary British pub fare and a beautiful setting. Craig our waiter was super helpful and accommodating and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Don't miss a chance to have a meal here when in Winchester. My favourite was the cheese souffle and honey and pine nut ice cream sandwich.Food: 5/5
Delicious food!! Only request is that the lamb could be rarer but it tasted delicious The gooseberry fool was absolutely amazing, but I thought it was shortbread glad it wasn't. Maybe some rewording on the menu? And the cocktail pride and prejudice is a great idea. Coming again!
Fabulous and charming restaurant in Winchester. The building made in 1450 is oozing with charm and character to create the perfect atmosphere for the perfect dining experience. The food was first rate and we thoroughly enjoyed every element of each dish. Complements for the chef! The service was warm and attentive and made us feel right at home. Thank you to the owners and staff and we hope to be back one day…
Love the history behind this beautiful restaurant. Very cosy vibe. Food yummy, good range of Vinos and cocktails. Craig made our visit worthy of going again. What an asset he is to the rectory. Thanks Craig!! You are a star Food: 4/5
This cozy and authentic pub was so nice! Really close to the center of Winchester. The food was so delicious and good portions. The staff also were so friendly and helpful. I recommend it for a proper old and cozy pub.
Third visit, lovely place, great food. Bit of a long gap between starter and main. Only one vegetarian main on our preordered menu which meant our veggie party member didnt have any choice. Still, lovely place. Would go again.Food: 5/5
