Such a beautiful castle. I know it's the last to be built but wow its stunning. Staff are friendly and quite happy to answer questions about the castle. The gardens are so pretty. Such a relaxed calm feel about the whole place. Planning on returning very soon to do one of the woodland walks along the river. A great place for all ages... kiddies look out for the Teddy bears
Had a good walk around the castle and gardens. The castle is almost modern in its construction and appearance and has rooms that are still in use by the family who owns the place. Some interesting rooms with various treasure and artefacts from around the world. Gardens are very nice, clean and impeccably maintained. The usual NT Gift shop, you know what to expect price wise! Decent lunch, again at a price even the Ritz would smile at
Beautiful castle, chapel and garden. Really nice exposition. It would be nice if there was a playground for children, as in some of the NT places. We decided to visit on Sunday, and it was very busy, there were few tours in. The cafe was busy too, but there were plenty of tables indoors and outdoors available. We decided to have venison burgers and there were delicious.
Great to visit after the restoration. The castle exhibitions are really informative and interesting, plus the cafe, visitor centre and facilities all great. The walk down to Fingle Bridge was steep in places especially with a dog on lead but well maintained. The bridge and river are great for the kids, and the dog! Good amount of parking and generally good access all around. Worth a visit!
Visited Castle Drogo with the family. Set in an idyllic landscape sits from my perspective the imposing, stark, granite building that is Castle Drogo. Castle in name as it's actually the folly of a self made millionaire. I mean he couldn't have picked a better spot to build, but unfortunately the building isn't to my taste. A lot of wasted space inside. Huge corridors and landing whilst the rooms themselves are quite humble. I thought the information was going to talk about its history as a prison or army base... But no it was built as a home. I really wish National Trust would display more information about the staff and servants of these properties as I feel this would give much more depth to the experience and seems to be lacking in many National Trust properties obviously the lord's/ladies and owners can still be the main focus of the information but to recount the lives of those who worked in these sites would also be of huge interest Definitely still worth a visit. Now onto the best bit... In complete contrast to the harsh house are the stunning grounds and beautifully kept gardens. At Castle Drogo these are some of the best around, maybe as I didn't expect them against the cold house it really does surprise you. And better yet definitely do take your dog like we did because you can walk down to the stunning teign gorge from the house. The river is beautiful and you can walk as many miles as you want. Great day out overall even if the house wasn't quite the castle I expected.
What a wonderful place this is ! Fascinating to tour the "castle" inside, very helpful Volunteers, & a superb glimpse into the past. The View is Awesome & the gardens are really special. Thank goodness for the NT, if your not a Member please consider, you won't be disappointed
A castle built, of granite in the twentieth century - great stately home with fantastic views over Dartmoor. Full of history and beautiful decoration inside, take your time to explore the castle and enjoy the scenery surrounding the castle. The staff at the national trust were all very informative and friendly. Note if you have backpacks or child back carriers, you may be asked to leave them on entry or adjust them forward to avoid knocking some of the valuable items inside the castle. Furthermore, you may be interested into walks with dramatic views from the Teign river gorge and Dartmoor. Definitely a fantastic way to spend your day just a little far away from the A30. I strongly recommend Castle Drogo and the Teign gorge walks as a fantastic day for the whole family.
Hard to believe it was built so recently, compared to all other National Trust Castles. The Castle itself is spectacular and the grounds are beautifully maintained. The views from Castle are magnificent.
Visited on a perfect early autumn day. The last castle to be built in the UK. The volunteer guides were great. There was also a celloist and pianist playing in the main living room. The castle was immaculate. There is a walk along a gorge and Fingles Bridge is nearby. We will visit both in the near future.
The house is nice but I really enjoyed the gardens and the castle walk so much. Particularly the rhodedendron gardens. We went on a nice sunny day so we had a nice picnic on the grounds great day out particularly if you have a national trust membership
