Calke Abbey

Story

Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire, England, in the care of the charitable National Trust. The site was an Augustinian priory from the 12th century until its dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey, but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704.The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties. Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was handed to the Trust.

Great place to enjoy the outdoors. Nice to walk around and enjoy the countryside and unique gardens. That said, the home is filled with endless unique finds and treasures. Spent some time simply enjoying the place. Some food and beverage on site. Just know this more a walking venture if you want full enjoyment so plan ahead. Plenty of stops and things to see but never far from the home/abbey. You'll leave satisfied you went.

A local treasure with lots of rooms and gardens to explore. Most of the grounds and property are accessible to all, just no pushchairs upstairs at the house but you can borrow a hip-seat (toddler carrier). Clean, accessible facilities, restaurant, shop and café, making this nice place to bring family and friends of all ages. Food in restaurant is very good in our experience. No baby food but there is a microwave to heat your own.

Calke Abbey was beautiful today baked in the sunshine. Lots of people there but at no time did it feel overcrowded. Really enjoyed ourselves. Only had time to visit the house so must come back another time to see the gardens. The grounds were extensive and magnificent. You really need to the WHOLE day there particularly on a beautiful sunny day like today.

The Calke Explore Trail is a great place for active play. === Took the kids again this weekend to play on the Explore Trail only to find it is closed for improvements and doesn’t reopen until summer 2019. Disappointed that we didn’t find that out until we’d paid to enter and parked up. Staff were not apologetic. We had checked website before our visit which posted no warning. So we effectively paid to have a picnic and play at the playground.

This is an excellent property for all as plenty outside and in. There are now the 'family rooms open' which were used the Canadian cousin until his death . So even more to see if you think you have seen it all. Great shop and large cafe. Barbecue outside today( April 8th) . A bit too cool for that but many ,many hundreds of cars today yet it did not seem crowded. Visitors just vanish about the property and grounds. First class.
