My reviews are honest and exactly as I find things. Visited on 9th Sept 2020. We stopped for a cup of tea, which was outrageously expensive. The table cloths were plastic. We were asked if we wanted food but not wanting to take out a second mortgage for what looked very unappetising and mediocre we declined. You would have thought we'd asked for their first borns blood by reaction we got back. Within minutes we were asked again if we wanted food and got a very frosty 'humph' as the waitress flounced away. We drank our tea which was as weak as nats wee but less tasty. I'd like to say I'd recommend this place but I can't, my reputation of honest reviews would suffer a nosedive if I did.
We come here every day for crab sandwiches served with a small side salad and and a pot of tea. With a tip it comes to just shy of £30 in total for the two of us. That isn't cheap, but it is THE BEST crab sandwich we've had all white meat, and no more expensive than we've paid elsewhere in St. Ives. The service has been good, and the place is an absolute sun trap this time of year. Look out for Fish Pie, a local cat, who stops here for a bite of tuna, and who can be tempted with a taste of crab meat.
Just had the worst, most overpriced bacon sandwich of my life. The bacon was clearly microwaved, there was hardly any bacon, it was swimming in butter, they refused to add cheese to my sandwich !! because it was not in the menu and I paid £5.95 for the privilege. The service was awful - two 13yos with no supervision. It was so bad I felt compelled to write this. The cakes looked good though so maybe it’s not the place to go for savoury food....
Absolutely awful! My story is utterly comical. We arrived and got served quite late, but then staff started screaming at customers telling them to GET OUT, as a result of them having no tea towels. Then a bird came in the door, which then started knocking loads of food all over the place. Then a larger lady, burst through the doors, fell over right in front of me and spilt hot, boiling tea over my new white blouse. Will not be returning, or if I do, I won't be wearing white that's for sure.
Poor service, overpriced food and staff aren't very friendly. On arriving, no one else was in the cafe, and no staff greated us. Eventually a girl came out and said, we don't do table service and you have to order at the till. We placed our order, should have left then, but didn't. Our mistake!!! Very overpriced for not brilliant food. Even when food came out, no please or thank you. Poor manners and bad customer service. After the food, I used the toilet. So wish I hadn't. Toilet was dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Door to toilet was right off kitchen prep area and door wedged open. I told the girl when I came out right into the kitchen, that the door should be shut for hygiene reasons. As I walked away, the other girl came back and said why was door closed and to open it. I didn't know what I was talking about. EHO need to visit this place as very poor hygiene standards here. Will not return, don't waste your money on this cafe. Shame really as could be a lovely little place as ideally located
If you want to spend some money here on the food/drink they have on offer, but also have the absolute and sheer audacity god forbid to have a bite of your own pre-packed provisions in their establishment, then prepare to get treated like you're breaking some sort of unwritten code of the cafes everywhere which strictly forbades you to dare to eat anything that isn't sold on their site, then get told off twice by the rude staff that "you can't eat your own food in here, this is a cafe!" after just spending £8.50 on "cream tea for two" which inexplicably included two scones but only one pot of tea?!, the scones looking like they had been trodden on by a wooden clog, then by all means, go to to Bumbles Tea Room! Myself and my friend got told exactly the above when we had a bite of our meagre packed lunches inside the cafe still whilst eating and drinking their products, which we had just paid for, first by the rude cook, and then subsequently by the young counter girl. When I queried if there was a written sign anywhere strictly stating that your own food was not to be consumed on their premises, the only explanation I was offered was, "well it's a cafe." Two minutes later the same girl witnessed me drinking my own bottled water under their roof but didn't say a word, so, bit of mixed messages there. I never usually leave reviews like this but I've never experienced the above incident fair enough, if we hadn't of purchased anything and just began to eat our own food inside then I'd understand, but we still spent money there and this was an unpleasant one made so by the rude and poor service. Go somewhere else if you're wanting cream tea or food in St Ives. I'm sad we picked this place as it was our first opportunity to have scones and cornish cream in St Ives and we were disappointed.
Not the place it used to be. It was run like a tradional tea room with proper service and table cloths. Service was of high standard. Now all you get is poor service, plastic table clothes and an establishment is not inviting to the public with flowers outside. Bubbles situated in a prime site near the Tate Gallery and beach and it would potentially a gold mine for the right person or persons to run it properly.
Really awful place. Staff were rude, answered the phone in the middle of serving us, added about £10 extra onto the bill and then when I queried it the staff member looked at me like I had two heads!!!!!!!!! I asked that my son had no margarine/butter in his sandwich due to him not liking either, sandwich arrived with butter in!!!!! Good job he didn't have an allergy and it was just a personal preference!! Tables were filthy. Will not be going there again and will not be recommending.
Poor service. The chef was heard to comment that the clientele were being picky expecting quick service. Several cistomers including ourselves walked out. Too many young ones serving they needed an older hands.
May even be decent... If the awful people running the place can be bothered to serve you. We entered when there was still a big "come in, we're open" sign on the window. Banners for local Cornish-produced ice cream lured us in. After entry, staff avoided us for as long as they could. When we finally got one lady's attention to ask for ice cream, she went away to deliberate with her colleague, only to come back and say they couldn't serve us because they were clearing up. Awful people. Shouldn't have a license to operate.
