Bodies-in-Motion was established in January 2005 by a group of local people as a non- profit making organisation aiming to address issues of social cohesion and health in the Pendle district of Brierfield in East Lancashire. Originally using a full volunteer workforce operating across a couple of sessions per week, Bodies-in-Motion now has activities on 6 full days per week, employs paid instructors (although still on a part-time basis) and works closely with mainstream organisations across the borough and beyond. Recognised in 2009, by Sporting Equals – a branch of Sporting England - as one of the top six voluntary sector projects nationally to be making a real impact on the lives of local people, Bodies-in-Motion goes from strength to strength. Bodies-in-Motion acts as the umbrella organisation for a number of separately funded projects; Bodies Fitness, Bodies Education, Bodies Kickboxing, Bodies Swimming, Bodies Adventure……in fact Bodies anything which contributes towards overall well-being which people want to become involved with.
Bodies-in-Motion is a frontline organisation seeking to engage with people who are not currently active, to help them gain the confidence and knowledge to move on to wider things. For some the wider picture is about gaining employment or moving on to further or higher education; for others it’s about getting out of the house or simply – but crucially – being able to bring a healthy lifestyle to their families.
