Nice and modern clean train station. One of the little stations in the UK that I liked! There are lots of shops and restaurants that keep you busy; if you have time sure! The waiting places are very clean and very nice. You see there also many screens showing you very clear information!

New St. Station has a broad concourse and a large bank of centrally mounted screens showing mostly departure information. There are many self-service ticket machines and a ticket office open until 10pm. It is also well-staffed. There are a number of food and other vendors on the concourse and others beyond the ticket barriers Seating is available though not plentiful. The flow of commuters during rush-hours appears to have improved at the concourse level since the station was remodelled, but the platforms can still be very congested. The Navigation St./Hill St. exit also seems underused now with more travellers seeming to use the newer exits on Stephenson St. and Station St., so it’s often worth using those during busy times if heading in the directions they lead to. Unfortunately Navigation St./Hill St. are only exits now which does impede entry to the station. Whilst traversing the station has improved, one area in which there is a room for significant improvement is air-quality. Diesel trains idling for long periods fill the platforms and concourse with fumes which are noticeable upon entry and in all areas of the station. I would advise anybody using this station to spend as little time as possible within it. It really is a place where the air-quality is terrible and cannot be good for the respiratory system.

Staff that man the gates are useless! Every day without fail if the gates are closed they take forever to let me pass through. I don’t have a swift card so I need them to check my pass and open the gates but they pay no attention to me. Yesterday the two men on the gates were standing there talking, one of them made eye contact with me and then carried on complaining about their co workers. Today the two woman did the same but the one on the other side had to deal with customers on her side, the one on my side however carried on standing in the gate way with her back to me staring into space. When she did finally turn around to me she looked at me like I had two heads and was the greatest inconvenience to her. A little more attention and actually doing the job they’re there to do would be great!

What a cracking five star international station. Birmingham deserves such a place. Wonderful in every way from restaurants to free concerts in an ambient atmosphere. On the business side, the volume of people is handled smoothly and efficiently. Platforms themselves still a little grubby but you can't have everything.

Been through New Street numerous times to visit my girlfriend before I moved in. I used to live in Wolverhampton so I would change here - over time I picked up a few things, most importantly that there is a bridge down the west-end of the station (just before Platform 4C starts) which is there to help you change trains without passing through ticket barriers. The barriers are usually a nightmare so I highly recommend this method unless you are visiting the city. Seriously, you have to go through TWO sets of barriers sometimes otherwise...
