Booked a room on a popular booking site dot com, which advertised a bath as well as a shower. This was required for my disabled partner who needed a bath to relax her back. The bath was not working as the cold tap would not run. Begs the question as to the last time the bath was cleaned if the tap not running had not been discovered. Breakfast times were not given or written down, so missed breakfast which they charged for. Spoke to owners who couldn't give a monkeys. Best advice is to avoid this property
We came here on our last night of our holiday and if it wasn’t for the fact it was just across the car park from our lodge, we would have left after a drink and gone else where. On arrival no one was at the bar, but someone did turn up. No local draft ales, regular larger and cider. A poorly stocked soft drinks fridge, a good selection of guns though. We ordered at the bar, the food menu was standard pub food, nothing fancy or unique to Dartmoor, only 3 starters to choose from so we didn’t bother. We were guided to sit down in the dining area, and that was a sad show. A sticky table, no cutlery or placemats, the walls were canary yellow, a few windows had navy blue curtains falling from the curtain poles and other poles remained bear. Two walls were surrounded by dreary conservatories full of clutter. A really dismal room of no character or charm, despite that we are in Dartmoor? I’d suggest a fresh coat of paint, new curtains some local paintings of Dartmoor and some new lights would look great. Toilets looked like something from a school. The food took almost 40 minutes to arrive…. Cheesy chips were great. Burger had some cheap fat leaking anaemic bacon inside with a poor quality burger and no relish, accompanied by shop brought onion rings and chips with a heavily onioned side salad. “Lasagne” was a joke, it was actually a basic beef mince tomato and pepper sauce layered with pasta and a slab of cheese on top surrounded with a with a pool of fat. The garlic bread was a cheap part bake baguette sliced in half topped with garlic butter, it needed longer in the oven. We were not given cutlery so I helped myself from the cutlery draw. This is an appeal to your chef, please go look up a decent bolognese recipe and cut out the peppers, this sauce needs to be a thick tomato and rich red wine sauce, not a school kids attempt at beefy pasta… Please also look into a recipe for white sauce, it’s only 4 ingredients so it’s not difficult…. By all means save money with the part bake garlic bread but please cook it longer or even fry it towards the end to give it a crisp texture. As for the burger why not use streaky bacon and a local sourced burger with a homemade relish? Can’t fault the chips, they were nice but I can’t say I’d return just for chips because the pub looks so sad and characterless. It’s like you want it to close down?
me and my children came here after being out all day as a little pop in as this place is right by meldon lodge park which is a nice local place to the visitors of meldon. great kind service, they have in the back rooms free pool a chalk board you can write on and darts with an electric machine. prices were fabulous . they would be hearing from me soon if i lived near by.
Had a meal in garden and stayed overnight in carpark in self contained camper. I didn't actually go inside the pub my husband did all my ordering! so can't comment on what it's like inside but the food was surprisingly lovely!! Nice children's menu, my burger was very juicy and nice and my husband's pie was nice also. Really friendly staff member served our food with a smile. The garden was full of ducks and had a play area - we had a lovely time there. The view is lovely of the surrounding hills and our stay was not too noisy as we parked far away from the road. As usual always call ahead to check your are welcome to stay and book a meal if staying in carpark & #leaveonlyyourfootprints I would stay again in a heartbeat.
The breakfast they prepare is acceptable, but both the room and the bed they gave me were tiny, and right in front of the parking lot goodbye privacy. Not to mention the constant car noise coming from the local motorway. I wouldn't do it again.
Lovely warm very clean room Food was excellent cooked to perfection and hot had evening meals and desserts breakfasts. Staff very friendly no need for any complaints on our stay so will be back very soon.. lovely quiet relaxed atmosphere just what we were looking for. We were bit worried before arrival due to some adverse comments but decided to try it and see for ourselves. We were not dissapointed.
Had a lovely Sunday lunch but midweek went in for a steak and all the trimmings, the only thing hot on the plate was the chips. Ordered a cocktail that needed cream but they didn't have the cream for it. Also ran out of draught beer. Overall not a pleasant experience
Why was it poor? Where do I start? We went for a Sunday roast on Father’s Day. We booked ahead of time. Our table, for 10 only had 6 places, so we had to move a table ourselves because they were so ‘short staffed’. We ordered, having confirmed childrens potrions, small roasts and large roasts. Gravy, by the way, is £2.50 extra. The food came. With all but one having the wrong meat on it. They took the order back. Except for the correct one, which then went cold for the next 12 minutes while we waited. Then the food started to come out with the correct meat, but it seems that the child portions and ‘small’ and ‘large’ roasts are very similarly sized. More on this later. Some plates had three slices of meat, some one. Some had 4 small roasted potatoes some had only 2. None had any gravy on them. At all. The food was half decent, if not spectacular. I’ll give them that. Good Yorkshire puddings. Then the ‘chef’ wearing civvies and an apron came out to see us, I guess to apologise, but only brought excuses about ‘new staff’. When challenged about the gap in food and the poor service, he just shrugged. When it came to pay, we determined, as a group that the service, food and overall visit wasn’t good enough, so complained. We then found out the following: The only new staff was one person, washing up. There are no small or large portions for roasts. Despite our order and confirmation by the same staff member. In their view, all plates were ‘the same’. Staff didn’t like your complaint and he lost his cool, becoming frustrated and telling me ‘I’ve given you a deal so what more do you want?’. Classy. That our order on the ‘system’ was still incorrect. We received a discount of £9 on the meal and some of our drinks almost all half soft drinks gratis. In fact, all drinks except one Guinness. He couldn’t remove this from the tab, I guess. I appreciated their half hearted effort to make things right, but rudeness, a lack of awareness in serving food and a less than pleasant stay mean that I think it is only fair to share our experience and give our reasons for why we will never go back.
Basic accommodation..good for short stays..ideal for Dartmoor and walks. Good bar and music..restaurant..well run..excellent staff..good parking..A30 15mins. Okehampton 10mins drive. My second visit.Rooms: 2/5
Need more staff one man running around doing 99%of jobs so not doing any very well. Two mornings on the run had milk with our breakfast that was on the turn jam out of date butter that had melted and then put back in fridge so was congiled. Some mornings you got one sausage and others two. Looks like they are trying to do it up room was in need of repair and dusting. If this had some money invested could be a lovely venue to stay. So get staff and do up
