Wholesome little country pub, serving local beers and good solid grub. Fires on in the corner during winter months.

We were out visiting the Needles and wanted to stop somewhere for close by for lunch that wasn't touristy.  This pub had great reviews and is tucked away from the main tourist haunts, has excellent food and cheerful staff.  We arrived at the end of lunch time, the place was almost full but they found us a table and sorted us out with a very pleasant meal at a reasonable price.

I was staying at the campsite across the road so the High Down was very handy, and turned out to be a great pub. I ate there twice and both meals were very good and prepared very quickly. The beer appears to be well looked after and they even have their own mini beer festival. It's just a tiny bit pricey (e.g. Stowford press @ £4.10 v £3.70 at my local), so can't give 5 points.
Friendly pub with loads of lively banter (emanating mainly from the kitchen!). Will be back next time I'm in the area.

Excellent in every way- unchanged in it's great IOW pub atmosphere since the 1970's but with all new facilities, service and food- a hidden gem, you won't be sorry you gave the Highdown a try! (PS; I'm an independent reviewer, but a big fan none the less)
