Bald Faced Stag

About

British Pub, Garden and Dining Room right at the heart of East Finchley

Story

This historic pub and dining room has been serving the residents of East Finchley since 1714. The original inn was built by two local blacksmiths, one of whom, Thomas Grub, who now lends his name to our private function room.

In the 1770’s the pub’s name was changed from “The Jolly Blacksmiths” to “The Bald Faced Stag”, possibly as a result of a particular white faced stag well known on Finchley Common. The current building, including our iconic rooftop Stag emblem was built in 1880.

As East Finchley has developed around it, The Bald Faced Stag has become the heart of the High Road. Just 5minutes walk from the tube station, Cherry Tree Woods and the famous Phoenix Cinema; we are the perfect location for a pre-show meal, a haven for weary dog walkers, and with our beautiful dining room - a great spot for any occasion.

Came for Sunday lunch with friends, had a fabulous afternoon in the garden. Was dog and child friendly, which was perfect for us. Garden has shady tables due to a gorgeous tree in the garden but had a great table half in the shady and half with sunshine. Staff were friendly and efficient, roast chicken was lovely and extra gravy was no issue. Also roast pork crackling looked amazing!
I have gone for dinner to the Bald Faced Stag for years and always come back. It’s maintained an excellent standard for good food with a changing, adventurous and delicious menu. Staff are always very friendly - we have never had a bad experience. A bonus on our last visit: live guitar and singing
We have been here before for a drink and bar snacks, this time we booked for a meal. The staff are great and attentive, knowledgeable and helpful, with a smile too, you see the two guys at the bar in the picture I was allowed to take of the guys, great help and sense of humour. On being seated at the table I managed to knock and smash a wine glass all over the floor, so embarrassing I tried to pick the pieces and was told by Will the Assistant Manager to please leave it as it's ok and they will take care of it , better than cutting your hands and causing more problems ! Thanks Will and sorry about the glass. The meal we had was the roast option, most had chicken with the trimmings ihad the trio option. Tasty and enjoyable, the only criticism is, it needed more vegetables on the plate , sorry . We did order extra sides and the broccoli with the chilli and lemon , master class . Only two had desert, Bramley apple pie and custard, sticky toffee pudding with pecans and I had custard with it , delicious. Thanks to Will and he's amazing staff from the bar to the restaurant and the the kitchen , thanks Chef See you soon guys
That's the last time I go here for a lunchtime pint. No staff. Manager swanning around arrogantly seeing to dining guests and ignoring queue of people waiting for a drink. The management's attitude is, "These folk are spending £50-£100, you really expect me to stop and serve you a paltry £7 pint?" I understand, food is much more lucrative - so stop pretending to be a pub, close the bar down and rebrand yourself as a restaurant
Really loved our Sunday lunch at the Stag! The veggie Wellington is to die for and the trimmings also great. Service by the lovely Isla was polite and super efficient and the garden really tranquil.. in fact felt hard to believe the pub is on a busy the high street. Will definitely be coming again! Parking: Parking is free as long as you register when you come into the pub
Popped in on Sunday with my wife for a roast. Have to say the roast pork was absolutely delicious, my wife had the roast beef which was juicy and not overdone, what was best when asking for extra gravy we weren’t charged additionally for this!! My wife being from the north extra gravy is always required and have been charged upwards of £8 for this in other establishments, so very happy on this occasion, will return again! If only for extra gravy!!
Lovely local pub, good options for kids meals. We went here for a family lunch on a miserable bank holiday Monday. I ordered the seabass and it was so delicious, and I don't normally praise pub grub but it was that good. My husband had the pie of the day fish pie and he also said it was scrumptious. Only thing missing is a cocktail menu ;-
The Bald Faced Stag is a gem! Adele's warm welcome sets the tone for a fantastic experience every time. The cozy atmosphere, and friendly staff make it a must-visit before the tube station. Some good nights when there’s a live singer too to liven it up.Food: 5/5
Went for a roast recently which was pretty good - beef was tender and roast potatoes were crispy. Quite disappointing service though - felt like we were being rushed, even though it was quiet. Definitely ruined the vibe for us, as we had enjoyed our food, but felt like we were promptly pushed out of the door.
This is a nice, local East Finchley pub that's well run and covers all of the bases. There's a restaurant serving decent food, the range of beers on tap is pretty good, it's not so noisy that you can't have a conversation and they host a wide range of interesting events. I'm not sure that the pub is outstanding but it does all that you need well enough and it's a pleasant, relaxed place to chill out with a pint.
