Having visited many times before, I booked a meal with my family here yesterday. Unlike previous visits, yesterday’s experience was shocking. We were sat at a table and after waiting 15 minutes for the waitress to return to take our drinks order, I finally went to get them myself from the bar. Three members of staff behind the bar with only 2 customers actually waiting to be served! The staff hadn’t got a clue what to do and I was left waiting a further good 10 minutes before I was even acknowledged! Finally, a member of staff walked me back to our table to take our drinks and food order. When we went up to the carvery, their was barely any choice and what was there was bone dry and inedible. This was only 5pm on a Monday evening! I would have expected something like this on a busy Sunday afternoon. The pub itself was quiet. I did complain to someone who claimed to be the manager I actually suspect was a shift supervisor who was extremely polite but definitely requires more training! The food was disgusting and the service beyond shocking. I will not be returning.
Fantastic!! The food was lovely. Even though they were busy, the staff were very helpful and the food was plentiful and hot. The Yorkshire puds are massive there was a good choice of drinks. Unfortunately there was no room in my tummy for any puddings! Definitely next time I think I'll start with the puddings. Thank you all for a great evening Merry Christmas.
Firstly we were greeted quickly and shown to our table. The young gent who served us was prompt, asking if we would like drinks. The food was very good the carvery especially. However, we had just sat down and we were asked what food we would like. This felt a bit rushed. Also, I had asked for a specific bottle of wine off the menu, I asked if it was a dry wine and our waiter said " I honestly don't know, we don't get to try the wines here or get to taste them". Now simply he could if just said give me 2 minutes and I'll have a look for you. Instead I had to go to the bar myself to look, to which they didn't have that wine anyway. I've worked in hospitality 20 years and never heard that before. Our starters took a long time to come out, our waiter seemed to want to rush getting these out but we were relaxing. Another thing which I know can't be helped, but our son went to the toilet and when he came back he said he had to step over sick which he was uncomfortable with. I did see a manager with gloves and an apron on though, so I assume it was cleaned up promptly. Overall service felt pushed at times, our waiter seemed stressed but food was good.
Came in for food on Wednesday thinking it be quiet! The restaurant was fully booked, the staff was so friendly told us we could wait and be called or we could eat in the bar area, but we wouldn’t have waited service. we chose the bar. There was a fabulous choice of meets and veg and it was delicious. Thank you, even though you was extremely busy you made us feel comfortable and welcome, we will be back. Parking: Car park was busy but still plenty of spaces around the back
Can’t really go wrong with a carvery, food was great! However the staff on the other hand were not very pleasant. The manager who took us to our table was lovely and so was the male server. However the girl that was serving us came across very abrupt. When taking our initial order when we sat down she was very short with us and cut us off when were to ask things. Then, she went missing for about 40 minutes so we couldn’t order anything when we wanted to. We ended up ordering desserts with the male server who was like a breath of fresh air compared to our original server. We ordered drinks as soon as we sat down then went to line up for the carvery which took about 15 minutes which is no problem but when we got back to the table our drinks weren’t there so i queried this with our server and she went and got our glasses and slammed them down on the table. When asking for the bill, I forgot to say I had a discount code so when I made our server Ella is the name on the receipt aware her reply was ‘well go and find my colleagues if you want the discount off’ I then asked which colleague she was referring to and she just looked at me and walked off. Then I went to the bar to pay which is fine, however there were 4 girls standing there talking and didn’t acknowledge us for a good 5 minutes. I think the staff need retraining in hospitality attitudes as anyone would think they weren’t being paid to be there.
Went for a eat all you want breakfast when we walked in it was clean bright and very spacious which is really important when you have mobility issues. The Christmas tree looked beautiful and it smelt of Christmas. The manager was polite and couldn't help enough so was all of the other staff. Plenty of choice when it came to the food was hot tasty and you could have as little or as much as you wanted definitely worth the money hopefully will visit again and certainly recommend to friends.
Booked an early lunch for 3 persons today. Regrettably, whilst you would expect the carvery vegetables to be freshly cooked, particularly early on, that was not the case and the Turkey and Pork that we had was tasteless. However, the biggest problem was that we were greeted with 3 workman working over the table next to ours. It looked very much like they were fixing the air conditioning on the ceiling. No explanation from the management team and we were allowed to endure their drilling throughout our meal. Not very professional !!!
Came here with my family around 6pm, and it's very good that we booked, as most people walking in were being turned away. Food, as always, was consistent, and the meat in the carvery was tasty. Blake, our amazing server, was attentive and kindly apologised for any delays. Highly recommended, just make sure to book in advance!!
Visited the Toby carvery about 3 times over the last 6 or so weeks. Food very nice but as always I wished the food was alot warmer. It's the main fault I have had with the place for several years. We will definitely eat there again and we will be hoping the vegetables etc are warmer on our next visit. Fingers crossed
As a party of six, we were accommodated very well to make our carvery lunch hat I can only describe as memorable, staff that looked after us could not do anymore to provide an excellent service and experience. Well many that may read this may well think or say it's only a Toby Inn and just one of many national eateries and I may well have agreed before this visit but as with the rest of my party we were all in agreement that this Toby Carvery Inn has most certainly stepped up the ladder There good carveries and not so good carveries as we all know, carveries are not Michelin seeking restaurants, but provide good honest affordable food,. The Forest Gate deserves recognition for providing well cooked meats and the best selection of vegetables I've found in a carvery for a long time. Well done Forest Gate I fully recommend a visit!!
