After visiting British Museum for whole day, our family walked to this bookshop and feel very impressive . When went inside, we could feel special atmosphere about this nearly 100 years of service. I like the motto of this shop “The Living History of Magic” and “by magicians, for magicians”. If you like the astrology, magic, and esoteric science, do not miss this place.
I will after quite some time go ahead and comment as it seems many others have had the same issue I did. I do not know if the american woman still works here but if she does, and you encounter her leave. What a horrid little person. This was a store I was excited to visit as a historical place for esoteric studies and such. Upon entering I say something to the effect of "I finally made it" obviously happy to be there. To be met with "yes I guess you did" in a tone which conveyed a rather more important air than I believe the book jockey behind the counter had earned in her lifetime. Her attitude and energy were horrible and ruined my visit. As it seems it did to many others during the same time frame. A shame, but just avoid it, you will not be happy.
Had a wonderful experience here today. Geraldine helped me find some books I wanted and had a lovley chat too. Geraldine was very welcoming, open minded, no pressure and friendly. I look forward to going back soon. All the best, Codi.
The last 20 years or so have seen the closure of so many of London's quirky, independent book and music shops. And don't get me started on the demise of the traditional London cafe... Happily, however, Atlantis have managed to survive, and are going stronger than ever in this 100th anniversary year, 2022. A must for visitors to London, because of the shop's rich history with its famous and infamous customers and because of its significance for the development of the UK's esoteric / pagan / Wiccan / Druidic etc communities over the decades. Atlantis also host art exhibitions, talks and book launches. For people like myself who live and work in London. It's always a pleasure to drop in, on account of the well-stocked shelves, unique atmosphere, and for their welcoming mother-and-daughter team. Geraldine and Bali are genuinely friendly and also very knowledgable, so don't hesitate to ask if you can't see what you're looking for. Or ask if you don't know what you're looking for! e.g. if you're not sure what section to look in, or if such a book has been published on a given subject. If they don't have it in stock they can try ordering it for you. Highly recommended; one of London's treasures.
Incredible occult bookshop, celebrating 100 years in 2022. Very knowledgable owner. Frequented by Aleister Crowley and Dion Fortune. Original painting of Mathers on the wall and original memorabilia from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. An important pilgrimage site for any student of the occult.
Lovely owner and nice selection of interesting occult books. Beautiful shop!
London can easily boast that it has something for everybody and shops such as this one substantiate that observation. This bespoke, excellently stocked occult bookshop, with its enthusiastic and welcoming staff, is an experience not to overlook. I never visit without acquiring a few new books for my collection, from an illustrated A-Z of alchemy to an obscure contemporary utopia. They have a great selection of Tarot decks, a collection of rarer, antique and facsimile books and volume after volume on Gnosticism, esotericism, Kabbalah, Thelema, Wicca, divination and so on. Whether curious about the subject or justifiably obsessed, The Atlantis has plenty to offer. It is also well organised so as to often surprise the browser with something new.
Incredible selection of books! All very well priced! People who run it are SO welcoming and friendly who know their stuff! Definitely will be returning on my next visit!!!
The store was beautiful, the books were simply amazing and I totally recommend paying a visit to this bookstore. However, I do feel I need to share this rather awkward experience I had a couple of years ago that left me speechless. I had always wanted to visit the bookshop so once I did I really wanted to see it all! I was ready to make some purchases and after I spent a good while browsing, I had a few mental notes of which books I wanted to get. The staff who was there asked multiple times if I was looking for anything in particular but I actually wasn’t, I was just looking around with so much curiosity and I just didn’t have any specific need so I just wanted to see what caught my eye. The lady who worked there didn’t seem to like this never really understood why as I was just looking at the books and she eventually asked why I was looking at so many different books if I wasn’t looking for anything in particular I didn’t even know what to respond and that was by far the most awkward and uncomfortable experience I’ve ever had as a customer. Obviously I told her I found that situation extremely awkward and left to never return again - who would? Has anybody experienced anything like this or was I just unlucky to visit on a bad day? Side note: I was quietly looking at the books with my partner, we always spend hours at Watkins and are regular customers there and never ever had anything like this anywhere else I would love to hear your thoughts! It’s a shame that happened as now I am super confused as to why she reacted like that?
Amazing place of magic and mysteries with serious practitioners at the helm. A must for the novice, the experienced or the curious.
