Story

The Museum tells the history of the Regiment from its early formation as the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and 93rd Sutherland Highlanders to the present day. It holds objects relating to the regimental history, and archives which trace the history of the regiment and those who served. The Regiment has served in all the major conflicts from the Napoleonic and Crimea wars, where it earned the name Thin Red Line at the battle of Balaclava, and subsequent Indian Mutiny. At the turn of the century it was involved in the Boer wars and served with distinction in both World Wars. In the last half of the 20th century the regiment found itself in Korea, Crater and Northern Ireland. The 21st century has seen the jocks continue to serve as the world's policeman in the middle east, Iraq and Afganistan.

Mission

The aim of the Museum is an integral part of the rich heritage of Scotland and it will display, preserve, and interpet the culture and heritage of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in order to maintain in perpituity the memory of the past and present deeds of the Regimental Family.

I have nothing but admiration for the highlanders. The men I met today at the museum were tried and tested men of all ages, hard men who gave themselves to their country. What an absolute service they've given to Scotland and beyond. I've been trying to track down the service records of my grandfather without any luck. I'll be honest and say I'm closer today than I was yesterday but only in inches. Today I moved forward by inches with meters to go. Thank you to the men I spoke to today at the museum who gave me some real honest insight to past and present conflicts.

Interesting and fantastic place with loads of history This is a fantastic museum to view and will give you a good overview of the Argyll Sutherland Highlanders and their history. Wonderfully laid out, with lots of interesting facts and even more to see. If you are in Stirling and looking at Stirling Castle you should spare some time to visit this as well.
