We agree to meet a friend there for lunch. It's a lovely pub BUT... - The menu had no prices!!! - They had no ketchup!!!! - they said it's been 5 days now without any, really? - The service was very slow, they took a good 20 minutes go get us some coffees. Other than that lovely pub ps. How difficult can it be to get some ketchup???
A beautiful, friendly pub with a good sized garden. I didn't eat when I was there but what I saw looked and smelt amazing! Great place.Service: 5/5
Lovely staff, great wine list. Fantastic dinner in front of the fire. Perfect setting and excellent food - baked camembert to share followed by fillet steak perfectly cooked, with dauphinoise potatoes, delicious apricot frangipane tart to follow. 6 of us all ordering diffent dishes, all good and smooth and attentive service. We stayed the night and breakfast was also terrific - I had the full English but there was a good choice of other options.. My room was very comfortable with great character and lots of pampering touches.
Went for Sunday lunch. Took 45 minutes to get our drinks and order despite prompting and it not being busy half full. No roast and pie available as “ovens were not working”. Asked how long approx for food and after speaking to the chef, the waiter said it “was impossible to say”. We had no faith our food would arrive within an hour, so we cut our losses and left. As we were leaving, the waiter apologised citing manager had resigned. Two staff running bar and tables, should have managed expectations and called and cancelled bookings. Setup to fail before even opened the doors. The owners need to get hold of this shambles quickly, before what was a good reputation is shattered.
Updated as new ownership again. Lost 2 stars. Food was OK prob 7/10, not as good as the previous ownership. Portion size a lot smaller, fish not as good as previously. --‐---------------------------------‐------ Post from previous ownership Food was great today, compliments to the new chef. 10/10.
Don't waste your money, Sunday roast for £21, should be fantastic. Over cooked Beef paired with obliterated cauliflower cheese, along side overcooked carrot was not what I was hoping for. We were served uncooked squid, swapped out without any drama for fully cooked squid. Service was average, managed to mess up our order, and them left us without cutlery. If you want to drink in a pub with an incredible interior and maybe a packet of crisps, knock yourself out, it is after all a beautiful building. I'd really really suggest giving this place a miss, for anything more though.
Terribly disappointed by the food. We were a large group and all burgers were dry and served with stale buns. The staff was friendly but I won’t be returning. It’s a great shame as last time I ate there a few months ago it was so much better. What happened?
Save your money go to spoons.... We visited the anchor for a family celebration. We'll What can I say apart from what a total disappointment. All food was poor and have been served much better quality at weatherspoons at a quarter of the price. The Vegetarian option was a dismal amount of risotto in a bowl which I can only say resembled cats vomit. When the burger and chips came out well it looked like a kids meal with very little chips chucked on a plate and poorly presented, when being asked of we could possibly have a few more chips for one of the plates that only had a small handful we were told no the chef said you need to order more. Was a lovely evening as we were with family celebrating a well deserved family members birthday but the food and service with a service charge of £27 was a complete let down. Would never recommend
Brilliant pub lunch in a beautiful genuine village pub. The woodworm in the beams makes it all ! Great VFM food and service. Unfortunately couldn't have a beer from the well stocked bar as was driving. Will be back in a taxi!
What a delightful place to stay. The quirky antiques are interesting, the food is tasty, the beers are great, the staff were friendly, the room was luxurious and the countryside location is beautiful. Don't stay in the Alton hotels, they are poor by comparison. Absolutely charming !
