This review is following a negative and unsolicited cold approach by chuggers in Plymouth on 2 August 2022. I don't like being approached by chuggers representing any organisation. This is because I feel that my personal space and boundaries are being violated. It's made worse when chuggers ignore the fact that I'm walking deliberately away from them but still decide to approach and attempt to interact with me. The chuggers that tried to do this in Plymouth ignored my boundaries and nonverbal communication the diagonal beeline away from them. The worst of chuggers, Micah, belittled my declaration of being autistic as being similar to, "Oh, I'm Hispanic so you can't talk to me." Micah refused to confirm their name. I only learnt of it by repeatedly asking one of their colleagues. After this, before I was about to leave to eat my takeaway food, Micah shared a high-five with a colleague. From reading other reviews, some of which were posted 6 years ago, it's clear that Alzheimer's Research UK has not improved when it comes to seeking donations from the public. I would be embarrassed if my organisation/charity recruited people like Micah. Doubly so if they were being paid by the hour, which these chuggers are. Alzheimer's Research UK has joined the likes of Oxfam on my list of unethical charities and organisations that will never get my money.
We called these guys to collaborate and help build awareness to those affected by Alzheimer's in our local community. The first thing they asked us was how many followers we have and then proceeded to berate us over the phone telling us we are unworthy on collaborating a photography project to document and build awareness around the condition. I thought this was a charity? What happened to goodwill?
Beware requesting their brochure - you get a call from a very pushy salesman asking you, there and then, to sign up to a direct debit. I understand that money is needed for their research but had they sent me the pack I requested then followed it up I would have donated. If I were an elderly person requesting this information I would have felt completely bulldozed and probably given all my bank details to this caller. It was appalling - I thought the Law had been changed to stop this bullying by Charities, cajoling people to donate. It felt that the Alzheimer's brochure that I had requested was at the bottom of the caller's checklist of things he just blasted at me - all he was concerned about was getting me to donate money. Alzheimer's Research UK - adopt this approach at your peril.
I was recently visited by two fundraisers. It's a worthwhile charity so I asked them how much of my donation would actually get used. They said that their overhead was something like 16% which seemed on the high side but acceptable. But then a disclosure statement appeared which said that they were going to raise about £1m and their fee would be 50% of that. That's totally unacceptable and I sent them off into the rain. Contact with home base yielded only platitudes.
I was just visited by a cold caller on the doorstep. I asked if there were any leaflets or anything since I do give to charities but I like to do a bit of homework on them first. Unfortunately she didn't have any leaflets, just a laminated sheet. She didn't pressure me but wanted me to sign up to some sort direct debit or regular card payment, but I won't do that with a doorstep seller.
İ would just like to say that today İ had a young man by name of Kevin Ocean. He called at my door regarding sighning up for Alzheimers Research. On many occasiins İ have received very agresive canvasers who dont listen or are very demanding. Well let me praise this young man. A real gentleman, and pleasant. Keep up the good work and thank you for being understanding. Thanks. M. A.
Shout out to Rosemary S and her colleague who knocked on my door in Peckham to tell me more about Alzheimer's Research UK and encouraged me without any pressure but just by her persuasive facts! to start a monthly donation to help with the amazing work the charity does.
I have supported this charity for some time, since my husband was diagnosed. I have always found them to be appreciative of any efforts made to fundraise on their behalf. I hope they find a cause and cure to help so many people, although sadly too late for my husband. Thank you ARUK for all of your efforts, a great charity.
