I had been experiencing pain in my left hip since the summer of 2024 which, after x-ray, was diagnosed as severe arthritis. It was impacting on my running activities. Chris Munro was recommended to me by a friend, so I went to see him at Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen on 10th September 2025, he confirmed a hip replacement operation was my only option. This was problematic, as I had a place in the London Marathon on 26th April 2026 and would need to be training for that. He explained that I was a candidate for the anterior surgery method, which replaces the hip joint without cutting through any muscles or tendons. It's far less invasive and leads to a faster recovery time. He said I would be back running within 6 weeks. I could hardly believe my ears!nnI had the operation on 30th September 2025, my recovery went according to plan, I started to build my running distances back up again from 10th November 2025, I began coached training for the marathon on 1st December 2025 and on 26th April 2026, I did it! I completed my first ever marathon, 7 months after my hip replacement. Chris played a big part in making that possible for me. I am absolutely over the moon to have done it. I am so glad I acted on my friend's recommendation and chose Chris as my surgeon.nnHere are a few photos of me enjoying the London Marathon.
I cannot recommend Mr Bassam Al Kari and Albyn Hospital highly enough.nnFrom my first consultation to gallbladder removal, the whole process took just 3 weeks and the care was exceptional throughout. Mr Al Kari has a wonderfully calm and reassuring manner, and made me feel completely at ease.nnAlbyn Hospital is beautiful, and every member of staff was warm, kind, and personable. The whole experience felt first class from start to finish. I feel incredibly fortunate to have received such outstanding care.
My care from beginning to end has been excellent at Albyn Hospital. Every member of staff i encountered from catering, physios, nursing staff and consultants were so nice, helpful and made my operation and short stay so easy and stress free. I would definitely recommend this hospital to anyone considering an orthopedic surgery.

Just had a total hip replacement at Albyn hospital in Aberdeen. Overall a good experience. Staff were attentive and pleasant it makes a big difference when staff smile and are pleasant, especially when patient feeling under the weather. Room was comfortable and food & drink good. Consultant surgeon visited several times and was happy to discuss anything so I felt well-informed.
