The other week we ventured to Woodland Ways - World of Bushcraft in Matlock. It was our second visit to this shop and both times the staff have been nice, friendly and really helpful with queries/information and experience.
My husband and I had a fantastic experience at the Autumn Foraging full day course this weekend! It was great to have an hands-on experience, source raw materials and cook together as a group. Perfect for anyone interested in sustainablity, if you want to learn a few survival skills while exploring the wilderness and better understand what goes on the supermarket shelves! Jason and Daniel are amazing instructors who made the day fun, knowledgeable and adventurous. Will surely come back when the opportunity presents itself :
I have just attended the day foraging course in Oxford with Ian, Richard and Bill. As usual the day was packed with information as we gathered the plants that we would cook later over the camp fire. We were shown how to prep pigeons and guided to cook an amazing 2 course meal, as well as following up with a discussion on foraging and the law, knife law and plenty of guidance around books and resources for us to continue our foraging journey. This is so much more than a "foraging course" - the instructors were amazing and led the day brilliantly, with friendly humour, patience, and in depth knowledge imparted with the clear passion they had for not only the subject, but in making sure we had the best experience. We had a great day in wonderful company and beautiful surroundings having learned so much. Thank you guys for all your hard work - we will be back for the spring one!
Joined the team for the bushcraft weekend this weekend gone. What an experience. Ian and his team Andy and Patrick were great instructors, full of knowledge and advice. The location is fantastic, a beautiful forest surrounds the camp making the whole experience feel more remote. There was a good group of people on the course everyone participated and contributed there experiences and thoughts. I’ve left the weekend having learnt an incredible amount and new found respect of the world we have. I’m already hoping to booking with the team again. Hopefully in Sweden next time.
It's a brilliant place to go if you're into bushcraft and camping. Brought a few bits, got more to buy, fantastic bushcraft items and only stock good stuff. Waiting until the new year before going on one of the courses. Update to follow
Recently attended the Tandem Canoe Expedition course at Rowsley and it was excellent. Started off with an introduction and kit collection in the morning, followed by demonstrations on land and advice on basic canoe principles as well as additional info specific to expeditions. Jason the course leader was great, taking time to describe situations carefully, teaching principles based on judgement rather than telling us what to do at each moment. Time was taken to answer questions throughout the day and allowance for additional development - the day ended with the chance to paddle the slalom course at Matlock which was fantastic. All the staff were very professional, friendly and genuine - we will definitely be back!
Okay, so I’m going to start by saying I am not someone who usually writes reviews. However, I feel it my civic duty to tell the internet what they’re missing out on. I booked onto the weekend wilderness survival course in Derbyshire cause of my love for the outdoors, and the desire to learn how to act sustainably and with respect when living off the land. Our instructor for the weekend was the wonderful Jay, and he was helped by a lovely chap called Luke. Now these are what you call top blokes. Jay is a fountain of knowledge of all things survival; from how to navigate by looking at a crescent moon, to how to process game and fish, utilising as much as you can of the animal. He taught us with good humour while maintaining the serious aspect of why we would be needing to use these new skills. He was encouraging, approachable, and inspiring. I learnt so many valuable skills this weekend, and there is no one I would’ve preferred to have taught me. Whataguy. The setting was beautiful see pictures. We heard tawny owls and saw so many bird species, which you get to enjoy with a brew in the morning. I came out of this course grounded and with a new perspective and respect for the value of natural resources. Bring a good sleeping bag.
During my first experience with the team at Woodland Ways I was treated as more than just a customer. The one day tracking course I attended was good value for money in a great location, our instructor Jason, clearly knows his subject. Even fellow students contributed to my learning. Thank you all.. I'm posting this almost two months after my attendance, the whole experience still with me.
Fantastic day yesterday on the Spring Foraging Course at the Haddon estate in Derbyshire. Our instructors Davey and Ian were brilliant, so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. We learnt lots of fascinating stuff about local plants, flowers and trees. It was great fun preparing and cooking a delicious meal at the camp of woodpigeon, wild garlic pesto and sauted dandelion, ground elder and nettle.
Handy little shop! Despite Bakewell being very quiet on the rainy Sunday we visited. The shop remained open. Great selection of equipment. I just wish I bought more money with me
