"Whitehaven Harbour is the gateway to the lakes. The harbour is a Trust Port, which means that there are no shareholders and every penny generated is reinvested in the harbour. The harbour is governed by the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners who are a group of volunteers with the vision of conserving and promoting the safe use of the harbour and its’ assets for current and future generations. Work on safeguarding and maintaining the harbour, it’s buildings and other structures is an ongoing process. Since 1990 through great investment, access to the port, use of the marina and public access has greatly improved. In 1998 a new Sea Lock system was installed in order to protect the town from tidal flooding."
