I moved here from London and I like WGC, friendly clean & a nice place to bring up children - Easy access to London & the north by train or car
Unfortunately like the majority of towns in the England, Welwyn Garden City is a shadow of its former self. Roads littered with pot holes and verging on undrivable due to said pot holes and parked cars everywhere. The town centre like most has been decimated with an overall grotty feel about the whole town. Schools are all pretty poor and over subscribed. Parks and playgrounds are poorly maintained and lack decent equipment unlike playgrounds run in Hatfield & Welwyn by their Town/Parish councils which are excellent. If you love dull looking box after box of apartments Welwyn Garden City is the place for you. The town has few locals these days as they have all been priced in the last 10/15 years by people moving out of London.
Fine once we actually figured out that the station was up the stairs inside the building which looks like a shopping centre… Very confusing if you’re not a local. Poorly signposted. We had two big and heavy suitcases, wandering around outside like headless chickens looking for anything that would indicate where the station was located. Asked a presumably local man out with his wife and grandchildren where it was, who told me, then proceeded to make jokes about my country, “do you not have lifts in Ireland?”.nNot a very welcoming place at all. Do better.
Sometimes the overwhelming amount of people trying to get in and out of the station can be an annoyance, but honestly the times I came through WGC Station were mainly at peak hours.
Retails shops and libraries and many restaurants. And really great place to enjoy your weeked.
