University of Southampton Highfield Campus

Story

The University of Southampton Students' Union, branded as SUSU is the students' union at the University of Southampton in southern England, United Kingdom. Union Southampton represents the students at the University council as well as providing support and social activities. The union is financed through its operations, a grant from the University and additional benefits brought by its charitable status. Its main facilities are based on the main Highfield Campus, but the union also operates a presence at the Winchester School of Art and helps student societies and groups at the other campuses of the University. All students at the University become members of the union automatically unless they specifically request to opt out. Its operation is enshrined in law through the Education Act 1994, the University Charter granted in 1952 and the Union's constitution.HistoryThe origins of the union lie in the original union that represented the students of the Hartley University College, the precursor to the current University, when it became affiliated to the University of London in 1903. It became self-governed by students in 1921 with the introduction of the basic structure of one male and female member from each faculty. The Union expanded greatly following the granting of the Universities Charter in 1952 and the subsequent expansion of the university in both student numbers and outlook, leading to the creation of several union facilities and services.

I came here for a university open day, and despite being told beforehand that I'd be fine for wheelchair access, it was quite the opposite. The accessibility outside was fine. Moving inside the buildings, wheelchair access was appalling. Narrow corridors and heavy, narrow doorways. No stepless access and the stair lift was not able to be independently used. We arrived 5mins early for the subject talk and ended up 15 minutes late, despite the fact that they knew we were coming, because no one could operate the stair lift and there was no stepless access. The lecture theatre had a steep set of stairs and the steps were so narrow I could barely keep my wheelchair on them without falling down. The only place we could go was directly in front of the door and I was repeatedly hit in the face by people leaving early. Considering I told them in advance that I was a wheelchair user, and was assured the subject talks are accessible, I am absolutely horrified at the University's idea of access.

I've met some fantastic people at this University, and had some brilliant times. However: The University market themselves in such a way that is very far from how they treat students who pay £9,000 a year as well as over £6,000 for accommodation. The moment there is a student who has some more diverse needs to accommodate, few care. Trust me when I say if you contact the vice-chancellor or anyone at a Directorship level in the University you run the very real risk of being shunned and ignored. Many things are designed to benefit the University first, over students. I looked upon Southampton as a fantastic place, that was really ahead of its time and an understanding open-minded establishment who would help me grow and develop through studying and learning whilst supporting the need for me to run my growing firm. Turns out there is next to nothing the University could do to really help me combine the two: academically, even down to helping me find somewhere sensible to park my car in my empty University Hall's carpark so I could commute up to London during the week. I politely tried to contact the Vice-Chancellor again and again regarding this matter and he always had someone else come back - its worrying how he doesn't care. To this day I've never had a direct conversation with him. I lose nothing by terminating my studies at Southampton apart from fees which are payable, and it saddens me that I will never be able to speak of the place highly, as I once imagined I could. If you have big plans for your life, visions of growth and success - if you're planning on building something for yourself, like me - I would strongly recommend you consider your options carefully, as, it might turn out the same for you.
