Been to this site in 2018, 2019 & after covid 2022. Stunning Great view of aircraft flying over, BUT the farmer this year has not bothered or considered his visitors and all the movements of vehicles considering all the bad rain and weather all this weekend. Did you not monitor the weather forecast for the fields etc. Cars, caravans, vans, trucks campers are all stuck in very thick deep mud, previous years the farmer has always layed straw and boards around exit paths/roads to exit points to make it easier to get around. Yes we had rain last year but forecast for 2023 was much worst, therefore they should have been prepared. This year 2023 No one has done any serious risk assesments for people walking around site, especialy elderly, woman & men pushing young children in push chairs etc. Huge trip hazards and no lighting at all on any gates, fields etc. People are struggling to simply walk around site to go to the toilet blocks or showers etc and could trip or break a leg at any time. Looks like this owner farmer in 2023 has only been intrested in the financial profits & gains this year other than public saftey. Many people i spoke to have confirmed that they will not come back in 2024, which i feel is such a shame because townsend farm & fields are the perfect location to tge RIAT runway. " Shame on him & all the management team he employs" for not planning ahead, watching WEATHER FORECASTS and not putting in contingency plans for puplic saftey. I will certainly not be back myself next year in 2024...will travell off to spain for two weeks instead. Hopefully we can all get out tomorrow with no damage to any vehicle including mine. Whist the tractors are there helping to pull people out, just hope there is no damage to visitors vehicles in the process...i guess then the farmer will have legal problems to deal with.
Fantastic place, fantastic staff with excellent facilities. They have a small shop on site, B-B-Q and full bar. Everyone seems to enjoy the campsite regardless of age. I come every year as do a lot of people so that says a lot. Join the Fairfordairshowcamping Facebook page and you will get lots of tips as to what field may suit you best. Restrooms: Lots in every field and kept spotless Dog-friendliness: All dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead
Second year this year for me here for RIAT23, when I arrived it was Wednesday afternoon and there was plenty of space to choose from, the ground was dry and easy to get around. Plenty of water stations and toilets, showers in a couple of locations on the site and the entertainment up by the barn. All good so far, but then Thu night/Fri morning it absolutely chucked it down, torrential rain and this was where it started to get a bit dicy. I decided to leave my car where it was and head out daily on foot. Lots of others seemed to enjoy the challenge of driving through the mud on site making it like a quagmire. Personally I think that vehicle movement should have been minimised to preserve the access routes. On saying the above I have to commend the organisers for their many hours of hard work and dedication to assist people getting on and off site, they even drafted in more tractors to tow people's vehicles off the site and they always greeted people with a smile and listened to them before hooking up and towing them off. I asked one young lad to tow me off as my automatic wouldn't have stood a chance of getting out, once he hooked on to my tow eye he briefed me on how to get through the mud in tow and when to steer and brake. Needless to say I was through the worst of it and on my way. Hats off to a brilliant team, from the girls checking folk in, to the teams servicing the toilets and the lads towing campers off, well done in extremely difficult conditions I'm sure I'll be seeing you again next year
Camped for RIAT and the conditions were hazardous for anyone trying to walk around the site. The fields were churned up by cars after a day of rain and there had clearly been no forward planning for the conditions, which were forecast. There was no effort that I saw to mitigate the mud by putting down boards, straw or anything else. There were no walking routes so campers were forced to wade through deep mud to get to the porta loos or showers, or leave the site. There needed to be something on the ground at the very least to provide walking routes. I slipped twice in the mud and fortunately was not injured, but in the evening I was effectively trapped in my tent. There were a couple of sinks that I saw for washing up, but no handwashing facilities. Disappointing for a premium camping price, and a thoroughly unpleasant and downright dangerous situation. When I took the photos below, the mud had dried out a bit but this only lasted a few hours.
To all the moaners out there, please see the two photos. The first is a purpose built caravan / camping site. The second is a farm being temporarily used as a campsite in very wet weather. This is a temporary campsite created from what is normally a working farm. There are probably things which can be done to improve the experience in wet weather. I've no doubt the owners will reflect on this and take into account for next year. The conditions were in no way "dangerous". On the contrary, I saw many friends and families and children having a lot of fun in the mud with impromptu mudfights. In the face of adversity, it brought out the very best of Britishness; people literally mucking in and helping each other. Under adverse circumstances, the staff made a truely heroic effort in making sure people were able to get out with regular tractor patrols. Even drafting in extra machines from neighbouring farms. I hope the staff can come up with a wet weather plan which doesn't involve preventing vehicles moving on/off site. There will always be folks who forget an item or two and need to visit local shops. Perhaps temporary roads could be put in place much like on the airfield, of course anything like this comes at an expense and could push prices up. Perhaps a more comprehensive site shop with more supplies to negate any need to go offsite? Perhaps get the Co-op involved in setting up a temporary shop? Despite all the mud, I thoroughly enjoyed it here and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. It's easy going, with a festival atmosphere and friendly staff.
Been coming here for years, great staff, great atmosphere, great bar and entertainment on sat evenings. Perfect for RIAT. Would highly recommend. Dog-friendliness: Great for dogs
Basic facilities but the best by far for watching the aircraft at RIAT. Don't worry if the weather is wet, lots of helpful staff who aren't scared of a bit of mud to get you going again. Thank you.
Fantastic campsite, well placed for the show. Despite the festival-grade mud, we had a brilliant time and the staff could not have been more helpful. Our Air Cadets had a brilliant time and particularly loved being right under the runway on Sunday morning. The only improvement would have been if the staff team had a duty phone for those struggling to navigate or having difficulties, but once we were in touch with the team they were brilliant. Thanks so much for a great weekend!
Great site for RIAT Spoke with Leoni Lovely Lady and manger of the site Great site with lots of options for camping in different fields Bar well run with reasonable prices and b b w food to boot Shame about the weather for 23 will definitely book again next year Well done Leoni keep up the good work. Bernie in the green v w camper
I would like to say a massive thank you to the team for getting people out of the mud! But I also got to rant After the second year, I think this camp site needs closer showers to the fields you are camping on and more toilets . I think your food prices and tent pitches per person are way over the top. At least charged £10 person and keep it the same ,I think it would be better than charging £23 and then going up each day more and more. You must make a killing. There is no health and safety walking around in the dark, and the mud this year was so bad. We left a day earlier because we didn't want to take a tent down in the rain. And ask for a refund for two people for only the night we was not camping and they wouldn't. The place is run by school kids who drive up and down on quad bikes, racing each other with family kids running around . Wanted the quiet field, It was no way quiet. people we're outside their tents partying till 02.30am. Prices are stupid. Great Entertainment and friendly staff. But please think about your Your health and safety for the road and public walk ways in the dark or day. And lower your prices please! Playground: Plenty of space and great views Restrooms: Can do with more
