Welcome to the Theatre Royal bar. Set in the Edinburgh’s theatrical heartland, we’ve been serving up food and drinks for decades. Situated on Greenside place, next door to the famous Playhouse theatre, we’re at the heart of the action for pre- and post-theatre drinks, cuisine and socialising.
With crystal chandeliers, a dark solid wood central bar, and draped curtains, the Theatre Royal is a spectacular bar and restaurant. Add to that a collection of signed show posters lovingly collected or graciously donated over the decades, and you have a veritable treasure trove of theatrical history.
We’re uniquely situated, bordering both Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town and the far older and fiercely independent Leith, a port town that still maintains a distinction from the rest of Edinburgh. The first building to hold the title “Theatre Royal” was around 500m away in what is now Waverley train station, but following a series of replacements over two hundred and fifty years we’re the last in a line of buildings to hold the title.
Our menu celebrates the finest local ingredients – cheeses from the borders, Highland reared Scotch beef, vegetables from Scotland’s fertile North East and a wealth of seafood from our coastal treasure trove – enjoy a quick meal on the go or relax and take your time with a three course feast!
