The only place we could get a table for Sunday roast, and we were pleasantly surprised . Good value and tasty food, friendly stuff and nice atmosphere
Food still very good and reasonable price. Cheesy garlic bread was really well done. Staff extremely attentive and very welcoming. Portions were sizeable. We had starter and main and were totally stuffed. Sauteed potatoes were excellent. Only minor negative was that the service wasn't particularly quick for the food. Not an issue for us, and possibly would be different on a other day.
I loved the White Horse during my time living in Westbury on Trym for a year in 2020/2021, so much that we were going there almost every week, because of the high quality, delicious food with interesting twists and very professional and nice staff. I was looking forward to visiting again after moving back to Bristol, and could not be more disappointed. The food is now average. The Sunday roast I ordered was generous in portion but only ok in taste. The sweet potato mash was watery, the nut loaf did not taste of nuts, and the roasted potatoes were very hard. The staff is nice, but definitely not trained to the level of the team under previous ownership. We booked a table for 2pm, but our reservation was written down as 1pm, and we ended up in a dark room at the back with no windows. I saw the person on the bar picking up ice cubes with their hand and putting it in a glass and then proceeding to pour customers' drinks. It was not terrible, but I won't come back.
We had a lovely dinner last night. Can't fault anything. Excellent service , very good food and great atmosphere. This was our first dinner out after months and we couldn't choose a better place to go to. Tablets are spaced out so you feel comfortable and safe. There is plenty of hand sanitizer, gloves and masks. We will definitely come back.
This is a gastro type pub that you could so easily walk past. Don't! Run by a family with a clear desire to deliver 'English food with a twist' their words, it's a clean, modern, semi-rustic place but not done in the large square open space style that some conversions have carried out. Cosy, relaxed feel with exceptionally good, friendly service. The menu offers a good range of dishes and a really good range of starter/sharer/taster dishes with a small range of desserts. A young head chef delivers really good food and the mussels are exceptionally good. All sauces and drizzles tried were wonderfully smooth and full of balanced flavour to match the dish. Any downs? Well, just two. The crab fish cakes could easily have had more flavour and the non-alcoholic beer range needs to be extended beyond the one choice. Don't walk or drive past, give it a try!
Excellent meal from the small plates menu, really enjoyed it , not cheap at about £120 for two including drinks but worth it
Booked a roast for 4 people confirmed they had two meats available, only had 3pm available so waited, and drove back from town for the meal to arrive and be told they’ve got none left. So Waited for hours and drove across town to be left with no Sunday roast and everywhere else fully booked. Won’t bother trying to book again to be let down.
The White Horse became my favourite local restaurant. The staff is friendly and has great service, the food is gorgeous, and the wine selection is various. Highly recommended.Food: 5/5
Fantastic food & great service. Came in for quiet lunch with a friend and ended up having much more to eat than I intended! Very reasonable cheap lunch menu, but more adventurous fare on the main. I had the lamb ribs amazing with a gooseberry mustard, which was original and went with the meat really well. Also had fish bonbons and aubergine rolls like involtini, both incredible. A lot of really interesting, seasonal flavours on the menu - my cherry sundae was layered with dandelion & burdock jelly for example; lovely to try food that is not just the same old stuff you get on other pub menus. Creative and brilliantly executed.
Staff brilliant, friendly. Overall utterly superb experience. Had sirloin roast. Meat was exceptional. Unfortunately only 3 stars as roast potatoes were very poor and gravy was tasteless. Also cauliflower cheese far over cooked. Veg trimmings were nice! Very poor lager selection. Prices were reasonable for style of premises but do not reflect in the quality of food overall. Had horseradish with my beef. Was not what I was expecting! That said, it was very very nice! Mouse like consistency. Homemade? Mixed with a touch of English mustard it was an outstanding compliment to my delicious beef.
