Probably the best spoons breakfast we have had. We may have been lucky looking at the other reviews. Very hot proper grilled tomato, good egg just perfect. Disabled toilet downstairs. Very small and steep staircase to main toilets. Staff all good. Not an amazing building for a spoons pub. Town centre location.nMorrisons supermarket and car park just behind the pub. Went back the following morning and same great breakfast, not a fluke.
Nicely done out, but always seems understaffed. Tables left uncleared everywhere. Draft beer tasted nasty - stick to bottled. Food excellent value, but almost always tepid at best by the time it actually arrives at the table. Could do with some kind of plate heater in the kitchen as it's always served on stone cold plates, which is half the problem, the other half being the understaffing, meaning it sits at the serving pass for several minutes before being collected.
Went to the whalebone Saturday afternoon and had some fish and chips and I must say the fish was cooked perfect. The batter was crispy and it was the best bit of fish I ever had there. Well done chef.
As usual nothing fancy in these restaurant/ pubs.nFood is ok, beer is very cheap, look around the area in local pubs it’s twice as much as here.nFood can quickly, beer nice and cold, a good group in.
Service is shocking. I use this pub regularly, however the service has always been appalling, with long queues at the bar. Today I watched the manager casually chatting with multiple staff members in the glass washing room, while fully aware of a long queue at the bar, yet the bar was completely unattended.
