The Squirrel

We stayed at the Travelodge next door so this was quite convenient. We popped in at approximately 3:30pm and we’re told we don’t need to make a reservation. Which was great!!! Once we went back to ‘the squirrel’ at 7pm, a table was quickly provided. We were told there would be a 40min wait for the food, which was fine with us. We were served by Faye and Olivia. Both were absolutely fantastic. Their manners, professionalism and customer service was second to none. Fabulous. However…once it came to ordering meals, my wife ordered a steak pie, unfortunately they didn’t have this. My wife then ordered chicken. After sitting for 20min, we then got told they didn’t have any chicken. We then ordered lasagne, they didn’t have this either. As a final option my wife ordered chips. Just chips. My lamb shank was delicious. A very good option and cooked to tender perfection. The ambiance and the decor is really nice. The service from our waitress’ is the only thing that made us rate 3 stars as opposed to 2 stars. Disappointed by the lack of food but great other than this. To say they’re our of food on a Monday is disappointing. If it was a Sunday evening it would be understandable. If you do visit, ask in advance if food is available or/and book a plan B in the town, but there’s not much option there either, so take a sandwich.

Two of us went on a Saturday night for a Harry Potter themed quiz and had plenty to eat and drink whilst we were there: Upon arrival we were nicely greeted by the new owner who I believe has only been there a few weeks and has already done quite a lot to improve things, so we were told. After being seated the service throughout our meal was keen, attentive, and friendly - a waitress came to light our candle when we arrived which was a really nice touch with great attention to detail it's the little things!. The place was really nicely decorated and had a great atmosphere. The lighting was something both myself and my partner commented on, it really set a nice mood against the timber framing and exposed brickwork in locations. It was also lovely and warm on what was a really dark and rainy night. The meal was lovely, great sized portions and the food was really nicely cooked with great flavours. The pricing was amazing for the portions and quality. We also got 20% off our food bill because we took part in the quiz, which I believe it a weekly thing - so that's brilliant! The quiz itself was brilliant and the whole place was packed for it. It was good fun - even if we did come almost last! The beer was good quality with a nice selection as well. The only slight downside experienced was the bar service. After ordering drinks with the service staff quite a few times after our meal, none arrived, so I decided to go to the bar myself a couple of times. But the wait was long and there was no real urgency in the bar staff. At one time a barman just left the packed bar and went to talk to another member of staff towards the side, which was quite frustrating because the service received throughout the meal was excellent. Ultimately though this doesn't detracted from a great night that's fully deserving of 5 stars. We hope to come back for another quiz night and some live music soon!

Four of us went here for some food today. But of a wait but worth the wait. The food was fantastic and very impressed. Only one note think there needs to be more vegan options on the menu or at least dairy free.

This was such a lovely pub! Service was great, food was delicious! We really enjoyed our visit Would definitely recommend!

We had reserved a table online and when we arrived we were seated immediately. There was no problem bringing our dog with us. It was straightforward to order at the bar, although it took a few minutes for a member of staff to be available, however after this they were very prompt to respond. We ordered 4 main meals and these took about 45 min to arrive. People arriving after us were told it would be 1h for food. The meals were all delicious and we enjoyed them. We will definitely eat here again.

Very nice Breakfast and came out quiet quickly. Soft drinks were a little bit expensive and when I asked for a tap water the water was not clean.

We booked the Xmas lunch special deal, with bespoke food from a special menu pre-ordered. Our table was nicely decorated The food was excellent and very well presented. The service was pleasantly unobtrusive while being promptly delivered. The value for money was outstanding in my opinion. This was altogether a superior experience to that to be had by simply calling in and ordering from the standard menu, which is not to be understood to mean that there is anything wrong or substandard about that.

Food was nice and the staff were pleasant enough. Dog friendly too. However, the service was positively glacial. I get that this is Christmas party season, but they really weren't that busy when we turned up at 18:30 on a Friday. After seating, the first drinks order was taken fairly promptly. Then there was a long wait for the food order to be taken; then another for the food to actually arrive we only had mains, and then again for a second round of drinks to be ordered and turn up. We finally gave up waiting for someone to take a dessert order and requested the bill. Surprisingly, that came immediately. I'll probably have to give them another go at some point because it's the in-laws new local. But, based on last night's performance, I personally wouldn't choose to go back.

Amazing food and service from Faye. I arrived to the pub freezing cold and asked for warm spot , she took us straight to the fire and she turned it up for me. Very polite service and everything arrived promptly with a smile. Great food, great service , we travel this way twice a year for work and this will now be our stop off place. Keep up the good work!

First of all I would like to say how well James has done on turning the squirrel around! We've had some fantastic meals here and never been disappointed so far! I would like to give a special mention to Helen to usually serves us. She is so lovely and attentive and certainly service with a smile. We usually have the mixed grill but my new favourite dish here is now the soy glazed Salmon but would recommend a lot off the menu! See you all again soon
