Story

Situated in an enviable waterfront location on the banks of the river Tay, the Ship Inn dates back to 1847 when it was first listed as a spirit dealer serving the fisher folk of Broughty Ferry.

Today the premises comprise a traditional and welcoming bar on the ground floor, whilst comfortable fixed seating and chairs are finished in rich burgundy leather. Above the bar is our restaurant which comfortably seats up to 36 adults. Our restaurant serves the freshest local produce and the freshest fish throughout the year. While the bar not only serves wine, spirits and beers but has a choice of three cask ales and a wide range of malts to choose from.

Our waterfront location has excellent views over the River Tay and is close to local attractions such as the Broughty Ferry Castle, Broughty Ferry Beach which is just 5 minutes walk away and the Esplanade.

This is a great little pub and it has a restaurant section too. There’s also some nice outdoor seating looking out over onto the Tay. The bar area is dog friendly but the restaurant is not fair enough really.nnLast time here we brought the dog along for lunch and ate in the bar. I had the fish opted for breaded and my girlfriend went for scampi which she really enjoyed. The fish was beautiful and just the right amount for lunch without overeating. Food came really fast and the people waiting were very attentive.nnNot had a bad experience here yet.
Went to this pub on my mobility scooter for lunch on the first warmish day of the year. Sat outside, as several others were doing. View across the water was beautiful. Everybody was friendly. A waitress came to take out order fairly quickly. Although I was tempted by the Cullen Skink I decided to have the fish pie and a glass of white wine. My husband had fish, chips and peas which looked lovely, and was confirmed to be so by my husband. My fish pie was enormous - could easily have filled two people, and was accompanied by broccoli, peas and cubes of carrot. The pie was excellent, I can't remember ever eating a better one, and although it was huge, I soldiered on and ate the lot! It wasn't cheap almost £40 for 2 lunches and 2 drinks but well worth it for the views, the quality of the food and the service. Before I left I asked the waitress where the ladies' was. Rather than just give me directions she realised I was disabled and took me upstairs herself to show me where to go. Excellent service although I would have preferred a downstairs ladies' - I'll check next time I go, to see if there is one. All in all a lovely time spent in the sunshine eating good food - What's not to like?!
Last minute decision to try here for dinner in the restaurant. Went in at 6:45pm on a wet and windy February night and the restaurant was full but the staff were great and offered us a table around 7:30 so we took a drink in the bar while we waited. A good atmosphere in a ‘proper pub’ and the atmosphere in the restaurant was also good with a busy ‘buzz’. The food was great, as was the service. Great value for money with very generous portions. Mrs D started with black pudding fritters big enough to pass for a main course in many places followed by Goats Cheese Nut Roast and I started with Cullen Skink followed by a braised blade of beef from the specials menu. All were delicious, coupled with a very reasonably priced bottle of decent Sauvignon Blanc. Bottom line, well worth a try but pre-book to make sure you don’t miss out.
A great place with an unbelievable view from the upstairs restaurant we had some great food in a great atmosphere. Only criticism would be their wine list needs improved. The Malbec was a little rough but otherwise the place is excellent
Friendly and comfortable bar & restaurant.nReally excellent food; good quality, well cooked and good portions, definitely recommended.nView from inside the upstairs dining areanMoney per person included drinks and desserts with mains.
