Unfortunately not what it once was. Booking is via voicemail system and it was not made clear at time of booking that their pub license does not permit children after 9 pm. Our booking was for 7:30 and we arrived on time but it it took 30 minutes to place our food order and I had to get up and to find someone to do so. We were warned by the person who seated us to choose only two courses or we would overstay the 9 pm cutoff for the licensing. Not ideal. My food was okay, fish and chips but nothing spectacular. My mother had salmon which was small and she reported it was overly or weirdly spiced. The place is very charming looking with plenty of character but this was made less appealing by very loud pop music playing in the dining rooms. After eating our food quickly, we had to chase up getting the bill, after all that pressure to eat quickly. It was joyless and we did not tip. The manager seemed almost at the point of tears, for which I am sorry but at these prices, the service should be better and details matter. We would not have booked for 7:30 knowing service was so slow so that needed to be made clearer at booking. I used to love this place when it had amazing food and cheerful service and was a bit less pretentious.
First time at this Edinburgh institution and would recommend to all. We were a large party celebrating a milestone birthday and the day was perfect thanks to all the staff. From letting us access the table early to put out decorations to the fabulous servers who were so accommodating and took the best photo of the day. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. A good range of non-alcoholic drinks which is always appreciated. A real treat for us all, made perfect by such lovely, genuine service
Had a lovely dinner here with the family. Food was great with such a great variety of dishes to choose from. Our server was polite and took any allergies seriously, making us feel very welcome and look after. Seated upstairs made for a lovely dining experience - we will be back for the skittle alley another day!
We had trouble arriving on time due to public transport chaos and the manager was so helpful in keeping us right. We were warned there were delays in food delivery as it was so busy but the waitress helped us get starters very quickly indeed so we didn't mind the wait. The acoustics were good - plenty of space between us and others which I really appreciated. The staff was very busy but we were frequently asked how we were so never needed to wait long for service. The food was fantastic, especially the broccoli with samphire side. It was good to have a choice of some nutritious food. We then played skittles which was a very fun novelty and great to have the space to ourselves. We had an amazing time overall and were impressed with the level of hosting. Thank you so much!
The setting, food, and staff are all exceptional! We had a lovely table, staff were so very helpful and friendly. Our food was amazing! We loved everything from our drinks, appetizers, main courses and desserts. It has been our very first trip to Scotland and we will definitely be back to visit the Sheep’s Heid Inn!
We had booked a dinner reservation several days prior that unfortunately needed to be cancelled due to an unavoidable transportation issue. The booking, cancellation and re-booking processes were all quick and easy through your online system. Our lunch was very nice and the service was friendly & courteous. We would happily stop in again on our next trip to Edinburgh!
Josh was very helpful with the menu and everything he suggested was fantastic. He is also so talented speaking Greek, we were all amazed by his effort and level of Greek language. My friends and I had delicious main courses and the service was excellent. Atmosphere, music, drinks were all great. We have already booked our table for Christmas!
We went with about 10 people from a cruise excursion prior to going to the military tattoo. The waiter was attentive. Fish and chips were good. Drinks were good. Due to our time constraints I would have preferred to eat closer to downtown but it was a nice place.
Lovely atmosphere and location. The food was delicious and the pub is well-decorated with a homey, inviting, historic atmosphere. It feels clean and well-cared for, the wait-staff were courteous and professional. Overall an excellent time there and I would come again. We walked all around Arthur's Seat and Queen's Drive then dipped down into Duddingston to the pub as a reward for our exercise.
We arrived early and asked if we could sit outside rather than inside, the team were very accommodating. Whilst we had quite a long wait for our main courses and the tram offered us a free drink, we elected to pay for them because we really didn’t mind the wait! It’s a lovely environment, the drinks were good and we were very happy to have a leisurely lunch!!! Food was exquisite and a great team looking after us
