The Sandrock Lynton

About

Family run, local business, providing quality food, ales and hospitality to the Lynton and Lynmouth area. Located on the road to The Valley of the Rocks.

Story

Nestled comfotably between the wildly rugged Valley of the Rocks and the quaint, pituresque village of Lynton and only a short Cliff-top Rail ride away from Lynmouth beach; The Sandrock offers good reason to take the weight off weary feet in one of our recently renovated rooms and indulge in local food and drink.

On the Western Costal footpaths, The Sandrock is ideally situated to take advantage of Watersmeet, Woody Bay and the Brendon Valley, said to be the inspiration for the location of Doon Valley. For those who are Railway enthusiasts there is the Woody Bay Steam Railway only 4 miles away and equestrians can take advantage of the local riding schools to hire out a steed or to take tuition as a novice and experience the grandeur of the moor on horseback.

Anglers may test their metal with all aspects of fishing available, ranging from course through game to every type of sea-fishing, in or within 20 miles of Lynton / Lynmouth.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Lynton you could do worse than the sandrock. The prices are competitive, the bar well stocked and the food marvellous. This was our first visit and 4 real ales were available, 4 ciders, some lagers and numerous wines and spirits along with other drinks that I can't remember (probably the real ale preventing that!). The room was basic ensuite , the breakfast substantial, though restricted to an 8.15 - 9.15 time slot. A bit more about the hotel itself, the bar is dog and child friendly, there is a pool table in a separate area and television that I think is only used for special events. Otherwise the radio plays in the background, there are no jukebox or gaming machines to distract you from conversation. Food is available from 6pm to 9pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday lunchtime from 12.15 to 2.30 (booking advised for the Sunday carvery). All good so far? Now for the down side and that missing star. This hotel is not disabled friendly, in fact not much is in this area , it also has no sheltered facilities for the smokers among us so if it's raining you can either do without or get wet. Secondly, if you are looking for somewhere lively this is probably not for you (9pm on Saturday night i think there were about 8 customers including us 2). However, the main reason for the dropped star, I have to say, was the purely business like attitude of the proprietors. Whilst they weren't exactly unfriendly, I came away feeling like I should appreciate the favour that they'd done us. We have stayed in a fair amount of places like this and ordinarily there is some interest shown in how the day's been or what have you been up to etc in the form of conversation. The only time they seemed to be happy was on the day we were leaving (this could be us but it's never happened elsewhere ). Bottom line is would we go again? Probably.

After a hairy moment where we nearly drove off a cliff, this pub was the best place to recover. Great service, the atmosphere was comfortable and would definitely go there again in the future.
