Been a rugby league fan from swinton in manchester, we always have a pre match meal at the royal oak, close to dewsbury's ground it is really handy, the proprietor was very short staffed on our visit last sunday, infact, she was running the bar, kitchen, the lot, trying to feed and water about 30 of our fans, she never stopped for to take a breath, everyone were happy with thier sunday roast, will as always return.

Unfortunately im only giving a 1 star also. The member of staff serving us was lovely The food was ok, eell our first dish sunday dinner we all had, had to ask for extra gravy which came no problem but would of been nice to have a gravy jug...The apple sponge and custard was flat cold with 1 piece of warm apple. But my main complain was the dirty tables not been cleaned properly..suppose it doesnt help when the sun is shining through showing every piece of muck..but there was dried in ketchup on ours in a few places which was very off putting... The place was dead which is not a good sign..Certainly will not be re visiting !!

I am giving the 1* due to the friendly staff however overall the food was inadequate. Firstly, several items were unavailable but was not made aware of this until we had already chosen are food. Secondly, the lettuce was brown and soggy, the prawn cocktail was very basic, the mushroom soup was mushrooms placed in hot water. Thirdly, the carrots were still hard and the onion rings were basically a ball of grease. Lastly, the treacle sponge (which we purchased 2) both were still frozen in the middle with minimal treacle on the cheap sponge. The chocolate pancakes were dry and cheap ( which my son loves chocolate pancakes) and even he turned it down. The food & drink is massively overpriced. I don't usually write reviews unless I am highly impressed or highly disappointed and unfortunately on this occasion I was utterly disappointed with the food. I have been here previously (around a year ago) and the food was lovely however after this visit I will not be recommending or returning to the Royal Oak in the near future.

What a total let down.Today i was among a party of 3 we would definately be remembered because only 5 people eating altogether. The food was bearly edible. The prices were extortionate and easy money for a meal that was thrown together.Rubber burgers and old teacakes.Even the tea was like dishwater. They got our money this time there will not be a second visit.
