We visited River Cafe for dinner with our family, and our impressions were mixed. The food was outstanding: every dish was exquisite and delicious, with no doubt that the kitchen here is top-notch. However, the prices seemed too high, especially considering the restaurant is quite far from central London. If you're willing to spend a significant amount on dinner and don’t mind the trip to the outskirts of the city, River Cafe won’t disappoint. But if you value a balance between price and convenience, it might be worth considering other options.
A fantastic Italian that combines both high quality cooking with a laid back casual atmosphere. Food is well prepared and cooked. The squid had the perfect texture, the pork ragu was so flavourful and the mushroom ravioli in sage butter was lovely. All the dishes are well thought out and have both a classic side to it with a modern execution. It gets very busy here so booking is recommended. Tables can be quite close together but this adds to the cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Service and staff are brilliant. Very knowledgable and very attentive.
Honestly, this place does not deserve a Michelin star. I am Italian and there are so many places in Italy where you can eat better food than here. The quality of the food is modest, the atmosphere of the place not so great and we are talking about dishes that are significantly overpriced. I do not recommend it.Food: 2/5
Amazing! I love to give 5 stars reviews because it means I found a place I would recommend. Food was very tasty; as a starters I would 100% recommend the Crab, the Pizzetta, and the Prosciutto with Cantaloupe melon, you can tell all the dishes have quality ingredients. Then the mains I liked the most were the Dover Sole wood-roasted with a salted anchovy —it melted in my mouth—, the Summer Risotto, and the chargrilled Longhorn Beef Rib-Eye, but if none of that is to your taste I would suggest the Tagliarini with Dorset Blue Lobster, incredible as well. Everyone was super friendly and professional and the owner is such a nice lady. We felt very welcomed!
Disappointing Service at The River Cafe I recently visited The River Cafe for the first time, hoping to get acquainted with the place before booking a dinner reservation for my husband and me. The setting is undeniably charming, with a lovely atmosphere and tasteful interior design, enhanced by its picturesque location by the river. There was even a vernissage in the annex that added to the ambiance. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by exceptionally poor service. I ordered a double espresso and planned to stay for lunch. From the moment I sat down, the waitress paid no attention to me. I had to ask for both the menu and the drink menu myself. After receiving my espresso, she never returned to check on me or offer water, forcing me to drink from my own bottle. I was dressed in casual sportswear after a stroll by the river. After waiting a long time almost 1 hour without any further assistance, I decided to leave. I stood up to get someone’s attention to pay for my espresso, and after waiting for about 10 minutes, the manager, Tom, finally approached me. He was apologetic and did not charge me for the coffee, offering something to take away instead. I appreciated his gesture, but by then, the damage was done. I had high expectations for The River Cafe, given its reputation and the beautiful setting. Sadly, the lack of attentive service left me very disappointed. While I may give the restaurant a second chance based on the positive reviews I've heard, this initial visit has certainly dampened my enthusiasm.
Always wanted to visit this iconic restaurant. It was well worth the wait. Everything about it is low key excellent. The food, service and atmosphere is sublime. Elegant unpretentious and chic. Parking: There is in street parking too.
A very busy and popular restaurant. They pack a lot of diners into the space and limit your table to two hours. The food was good, and quite decent portions. However it wasn't as good as I'd expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. Also the dishes were quite pricey. The service wasn't very attentive. We had a mix of servers and a few times we had to flag someone down to ask where our dishes were.
1 star Michelin Italian restaurant. Came here for lunch on Saturday. Busy and big restaurant. We ordered four dishes to share for both of us. We felt they were all ok. Nothing outstanding. The calf liver wasn’t outstanding too. Risotto was quite bland and look boring. I ate better food in Italy without Michelin. Staff were friendly and there were many of them. This restaurant feels more like an upmarket/overpriced restaurant rather than Michelin starred restaurant. I feel there is slight lack of attention to the dining experience. I feel restaurants in London cannot compete on world stage. I would score 6/10 however on google 4/5.
I had high hopes for river cafe. The staff were really welcoming and the atmosphere was lovely. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. The food did not live up to expectations. Some of the bread was really salty and some was not. The pheasant pasta lacked flavour and had a cardboard like texture. The veal shin had a great texture but lacked seasoning and flavour also. The langoustines were delicious and the Dover sole was good so if I had to come back I would only eat fish. Certainly not £400 well spent for a 3 course meal for 2 and a bottle of wine.
I’m a London Taxi driver and have picked up and dropped off numerous punters at this venue over the years. So being a special birthday took the plunge and booked the two of us in for lunch. The location by the river is great. We had a table next to the windows. The service was good. The food was full of flavour. I had the lamb dish and my friend had the partridge. The leg of lamb dish was delicious but two thick slices of meat was far too much. A lot more work on the presentation wouldn’t have gone amiss. My friend had the partridge. Whilst tasty struggled to get the meat off the bone and again little effort had been made on presentation. Deserts tasted beautiful. There were lots of positives about experience. However the price was still unjustified at £224 for just two main courses, desserts and a karaff of wine. I wish I had had read the reviews before I made the booking. Once bitten twice shy!
