What a gem! Situated in the centre of Knighton, right by the clock tower, this former public house has been stylishly converted into a B'n'B. My room still had some older elements but with the addition a very elegant and new en-suite. The owners Neil and Kath know their stuff and provide TV, tea and coffee making facilities and an espresso machine. There was more than enough storage space too and a lot of cushions. I did find the absence of dedicated re-charging slots a little frustrating but fortunately I had brought my own charger. The price of the room I thought was quite appropriate given the facilities and services provided. I came by train so cannot comment on parking. Neil and Kath do not live on site but are there to welcome you and they give you your own key to let yourself in and out. They also provide telephone numbers for an emergency. This was not a problem. They, and all their staff followed COVID security rules and so masks were worn. Breakfast, cooked by Neil, was excellent and very tasty. The full English was on offer with toast, marmalade, cereals and yoghurts etc. Neil was also happy to get any particular flavours too. In fact he could not have been more helpful even sourcing decaffeinated pods for the espresso machine. Fresh milk and biscuits were also provided. TV channels were limited to Freeserve? and would be useful to foreign guests but UK channels were limited to BBC news. and Sky news. I really enjoyed my three days in Knighton and this was a lot to do with the comfort of my accommodation for which I must thank my hosts.
We stayed here for four nights as we walked Offa's Dyke. Neil and Cath made us very welcome with lots of helpful advice for our stay. The rooms were of a very high standard, comfy and clean with all amenities. The breakfast was excellent and the lounge area was so nice to relax in after a days walking. I really can't recommend the Red Lion enough. A very enjoyable stay.
Really lovely weekend stay. Very friendly and intimate pub, though the food is so good that the word "pub" doesn't really do it justice. Varied and well-prepared menu from a chef that is creative and clearly knows what he is doing. All produce sourced locally too which is nice. Beer variety is good too and just as importantly really well-kept by a bar manager who cares about these things. We stayed in room 2 which had an enormous and comfy bed, was well equipped and had a nice clean bathroom. Can't wait to come back for another visit.
Stopped by for dinner while passing through the area and so glad we found it. I had a chicken risotto and it was beautiful! I am normally fussy with chicken skin, but for the first time in my life I ate the whole thing as it was so tasty and crispy. My husband had the the pork belly and he said it was one of the best he’d had. The host/owner was amazing and you can tell how much he cares about his guests enjoying their stay. He knew all about his local suppliers in great detail and could offer drinks to go with the meals. He even gave me some prosecco when he found out it was my birthday. He made our evening more enjoyable with the hospitality and being made to feel welcome. Thoroughly recommend and wish I lived closer.
Knighton is a small, pretty town with a few facilities and shops , set in the lovely Offa's Dyke landscape. If staying locally you won't find antiwhere local to match the Red Lion. The welcome from Neil is genuine and no effort is spared to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable. I strongly recommend!
Absolutely loved this place. Food was really superb - loved the fact that it was actually interesting rather than the usual standard rubbish you get in English pubs. The pigeon dish was truly exceptional. Nice range of local Shropshire beers too, as well as an interesting wine list. Very friendly welcome and service think we were chatting to the owner/manager - lovely bloke with a proper interest in wine and beer, plus really nice decor. If that’s not enough, it’s also fantastic value. An absolute gem of a place! You’d be foolish not to visit if you’re in the area.
Stayed here for 2 nights in the Green Room. Small ish room but very clean and comfortable and as I was on my own, more than enough room really. Nice modern shower room, if once again, just a bit on the small side - mind your legs on the hot towel rail if sitting on the loo. But overall it's a nice friendly pub/gastro pub/hotel/B&B. Weekend food menu is more extensive than the more limited weekday/evening menu although I didn't get to try it. Seems popular with locals and travellers and has a good reputation as a place to eat locally from what I can tell. Can highly recommend it if you're looking for a relatively inexpensive stopover hotel with its own in house restaurant. Breakfast pretty good too by the way.
Can't recommend The Red Lion highly enough -- excellent rooms, breakfasts, and the most welcoming of hosts.Rooms: 5/5
