Story

The Red Lion sits just over the Welsh border in the historic market town of Knighton; the town itself actually straddles the border between Powys and Shropshire. With excellent access to both cycling and walking paths (two National Trails meet here) it is the perfect place from which to explore the beautiful Welsh Marches.

We aim to offer something refreshingly different in a traditional inn setting. Cordon bleu trained chef Charlotte Turner-Taylor will be creating a changing menu, offering freshly prepared, tasty meals that are tailored to the seasons. Food will reflect the excellent produce of the local area, with suppliers mostly coming from within a 30-mile radius. Our seasonal menu offers light and not-so-light bites, three course evening meals and tapas, all cooked on the premises.

Our bar boasts a rotating selection of the finest local ales, alongside an interesting and carefully selected wine list. The bright and spacious bar area is an excellent place to relax with a pint and put the world to rights, or simply have a bite to eat and warm yourself by the logburner.

We offer4-star accommodation our individually decorated rooms.

Absolutely loved this place. Food was really superb - loved the fact that it was actually interesting rather than the usual standard rubbish you get in English pubs. The pigeon dish was truly exceptional. Nice range of local Shropshire beers too, as well as an interesting wine list. Very friendly welcome and service (think we were chatting to the owner/manager - lovely bloke with a proper interest in wine and beer), plus really nice decor. If that’s not enough, it’s also fantastic value. An absolute gem of a place! You’d be foolish not to visit if you’re in the area.

Really lovely weekend stay. Very friendly and intimate pub, though the food is so good that the word "pub" doesn't really do it justice. Varied and well-prepared menu from a chef that is creative and clearly knows what he is doing. All produce sourced locally too which is nice. Beer variety is good too and (just as importantly) really well-kept by a bar manager who cares about these things. We stayed in room 2 which had an enormous and comfy bed, was well equipped and had a nice clean bathroom. Can't wait to come back for another visit.
