Very interesting with lots to read. We did a 20 question quiz which made us get involved more. Some lovely displays and the biggest pencil in the world with a tiny chick at the top! It's not huge but it's full of artifacts and pencils, we even got some free ones for completing the quiz! There's tables, paper and pencils to keep younger kids busy too. There's a big shop and a cafe though we didn’t purchase from either. A couple of minutes stroll and you're in town too, close to all shops, restaurants and pubs.
I was very excited to go to this place which is the home of Derwent pencil. The museum has its own parking and their own toilets. We have enjoyed the quiz as we went around and got a gift in the end. Lots and lots of information about the pencil making back in time and more on its history and manufacturing. Good place to spend an hour in a rainy day. You will be surprised to see world’s largest pencil here.
The home of Derwent Pencils, it's so tempting to buy even more coloured pencils when I visit. An interesting, full time exhibit about how the humble pencil was invented with locally sourced graphite and how it became a top secret, essential item during the WW2! With friendly staff, great coffee and interesting exhibitions by local artists, well worth a visit
Went here today and really enjoyed it. Bonkers that they had to move production out of Keswick. I beat my girlfriend at the quiz so had bragging rights and I bought a tin of colouring pencils because they had the same design on as they had when I was a child. Very interesting place
Nice wee museum with friendly and welcoming staff. Great quiz for the family to enjoy whilst walking round. Lovely café with pencils and paper to draw with too. Tasty coffee, great cakes. Only downside is It would have been nice to see the factory and the production of the pencils. My Wife thoroughly enjoyed the shop and bought loads of pencils and paper.
Lots of information and and stories to be found at Derwent pencil museum. We went on a wet summer day and it was extremely busy. Nice well presented museum but a little on the small side. We spent no more than a. Hour here. Plenty of car parking in the area.
A hidden gem, that is well worth a visit. Prices are extremely reasonable £12:50 for two adults and a child with parking, toilet facilities and a little cafe all available. There were workshops available for children and various quizzes for adults and children to do as you wander round the museum, and prizes available once completed. The museum has had to be reinvented after the devastating floods and for a smallish area there is a lot of very interesting information especially the secret war work carried out here during World War Two. Highly recommended!
This is a wonderful and historical little museum - especially if you like coloured pencils and art. The gift store is really the highlight of it all as they have some rather hard to find products for sale, as well as museum only products. The museum itself is rather small and if you really are not interested in pencils, graphite, and local history, it would be a very quick visit. However, there are some very interesting things inside, which include the "world's largest coloured pencil" and a WWII map/compass pencil provided to military personnel. The museum tries to make the experience more "fun" and interactive by providing a everyone a special "museum only" Derwent Pencil Museum HB pencil and a trivia questionnaire that's rather detailed and difficult for people to search the museum information in order to answer the questions correctly. Once completed and every answer correct, you are rewarded with a prize. In our case a Derwent Line Marker. There is no "factory tour" or videos on the actual making of the Derwent pencils like there is at Faber-Castel. So, if you were wanting that, you'll be disappointed.
Excellent museum. They have a time line of pencils 1960-2010 you can draw your own pictures and there’s a world record pencil 3.17 metres tall but that was in 2001. It’s got interactive quizzes, ww2 map +compass pencils and not to mention the huge display of pencil sharpeners! The shop has 1000s of pencils you can buy at £1! The cafe has excellent service and the hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream! arrived in 1 minute! There is a very valuable book you can look at and free pencil included.Very good come as soon as you can and don’t give any 1 star reviews.
Great little museum, very interesting for the adults and a nice treasure hunt for kids. Your ticket is a pencil and there’s a nice little reward for completing the quiz/treasure hunt. Dogs are also allowed which is amazing!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
