We had the added luck of seeing the village on a glorious sunny day and it is worth a visit in its own right. We booked ahead and it's probably better to do so,it would seem to be popular. Butty Bach on tap so I was happy. A good selection of starters, mains and desserts. We both had the rack of lamb, very tasty and meaty they were to. Served with minted peas, potatoes and seasonal vegetables. The restaurant area is small but a classic English "olde worlde" pub. Definitely one to take your family and best friends to.
I put a review on TripAdvisor last week & visited again this week to be welcomed by the Hugely Sassy landlady/manager with "Back already". "You didn't kill me last time" was my reply. This is my new top & in The Wye Valley. I feel sorry for her as she will be meeting me a lot more. Do go
Lovely friendly properly authentic old beamed pub. Food was very tasty. Nice not to have burgers on offer! Crumble and perfect ice cream, not to mention baked chocolate tart with coconut ice cream.
The food was fab and the atmosphere was lovely. We were super impressed with the team’s approach to our son’s severe allergies - they were careful and reassuring and we felt very safe eating with him here and he had a choice of safe puddings which is a rarity for us!. Thank you!
A beautiful old pub with some lovely cider and a selection of ales. The food was fantastic , I had a bavette which was gorgeous, and the missis had the pie of the day . That smelled very nice too. Happy cheerful staff , plenty of leg space to eat . Dog friendly pub which is ok with me , although i don't have a dog. Also there is a very interesting church yard opposite which is surrounded by some very interesting houses. I recommend you go and find out why.
I love it here. I only discovered it during the Christmas/New Year period but have been back. Whether you are eating their great food or just popping in for a drink the atmosphere is great.
Stopped here on a very cold, very wet walk in the Wye Valley. Good selection of real ales, a roaring open fire and some lovely old-time jazz on in the background. The steak and ale pie I had was outstanding and a real morale boost given the weather. Staff were friendly too and it wasn't too expensive.
A fine example of a quintessential British countryside pub. Brilliant selection of beer wye valley 1985 lager is top notch. Have only tried the lasagna on the menu so far and it’s very wholesome. I’ve frequented the ostrich for over a decade and new management has embraced its heritage and ran with it. Still my favourite pub in the Forest of Dean. Will B.
The food here is lush, especially the potatoes and chips. 100% recommend.
If you are familiar with this pub before it changed hands, be prepared to be disappointed in both the food and beer on tap. I rarely leave negative reviews unless, in my opinion, it's justified. I tried all three of the available ale's on tap, none were particularly good and all tasted the same. My goats cheese and beetroot salad was non existent and had no imagination put into it at all, it was literally a few bits of rocket chucked on a plate with a bit of beetroot and cheese. Main course was over seasoned and over cooked rack of lamb with veg that looked like it came from the freezer section in Tesco. If the new owner is reading this review then I suggest you start tasting the food your staff are serving otherwise your new venture will be short lived.
