Your Local Beer House

Story

Situated on Long Lane in Smithfield EC1 our “local beer house” concept is attracting customers from all over London who have come to sample some of the best beers available in town.

Our commitment to providing interesting and quality product is appreciated by both our regulars and visitors alike. Although beer is our first love, we also have developed a great wine list and sell quality spirits. Our food is freshly cooked and provides a selection of pub favourites as well as a number of “surprises.” Our ethos is built around quality, homely service and the love of the “pub” environment.

The local beer house idea was developed as a means to promote and serve “great beer” in a similar way to the beer houses developed in England in the early 19th century.

These were set up as an alternative to the gin houses of the time. Beer was considered much more respectable than gin and changes in the licensing law of that era allowed ordinary households to apply for a licence with a one-off payment of two guineas to sell beer or cider in their home (usually the front parlour) and even brew on the premises. So enjoy our 21st century parlour!

We have endeavoured to source products from a number of local breweries and feel we are committed to supporting these innovative people as well as sourcing quality product from further afield. So whether it be Camden, Redemption, Brodie’s or Sambrooks in London or Brew Dog and Harviestoun from Scotland or Stiegl from Austria we have a quality beer for every occasion.

So come and see us and enjoy all the Red Cow has to offer.

Great pub. First visit. Neck oil on draft. Fantastic lamb shank. Outstanding service. Looking forward to going again and trying everything else Highly recommended.
The Sunday roast looks better than it tastes unfortunately. Tried to fit too much on the small plate. The potatoes were rubbery, veg was watery and everything was under seasoned. Even the beef was tough. Only decent part was the Yorkshire pudding. Really disappointed for 20 quid.Food: 2/5
Not bad not great. Strange little place with upstairs dining. Solid 2 1/2 stars. Food average. Manager wanders around whistling loudly. I hate whistling. I have that weird condition where whistling, the sound of food being chewed, fingernails on blackboards set me off. I get it. It’s my stuff but I have to have something. Go to this place. It’s fine. Not expensive but not remarkable and neither is the price.
One of our stops during our pub crawl. Very nice pub that works little bit later that other pubs. Good selection of draft and cask beers. Nice service. Recommend to visit ;Food: 5/5
Food was shocking. This is the remnants of the ‘club sandwich’, which consisted of 3 chicken frozen chicken nuggets, warburton’s bread not even toasted and probably frozen chips. Don’t even know what to say about the ‘nachos’… see for yourself. Rank, avoid!Food: 1/5
It was one of the worst roasts I've ever had. Too much on a small plate, stodgy undercooked potatoes. Chewy/tough beef. Waitress with the short silver hair was incredibly rude. Telling us what to do, bringing the wrong drinks, no smile, no apology, dropped the bill on the table after no check back and the table was only half cleared because she 'needed the table back' when the restaurant was half empty. I asked to remove the service charge as I felt that it wasn't deserved, which seemed to upset her even more. She then snatched dirty napkins from the table spilling food on my wife and a friend. Would not recommend.
Genuinely one of the worst roasts I've ever had. Definitely the worst roast I've ever been asked to pay for. Meat was so overcooked, potatoes barely roasted, all veg was pretty raw and had no flavour whatsoever. The disparity between what was described and what was actually given to us was almost unbelievable. Not to mention we waited about 45 mins for our food but honestly that was the least of our concerns once the food actually arrived. The staff handled our complaints well and offered us a refund as they could also recognise that the food was really not acceptable. Drinks were great but left very very hungry and disappointed.
Fish and chips was pretty good, though served with salad and garden peas rather than mushy. Barmaid was friendly but didn't know what 'cask ale' meant. That said their cask ale was good. Further star reduction for playing loud pop music.Food: 4/5
Great to see they are still running, especially with how empty City of London can get with the current situation. Used to work opposite these guys and so popped in now and then few years ago. Love their selection of beers, beautiful choice of ales and lagers. The food is good, had a pie and lamb shank. I can be picky with lamb as aged lamb can have a particular taste that puts me off, it was falling off the bone and tasted fresh to me and they had cooked it with a gentle fragrant of mint that was there but not overwhelming. Pie had a good amount of meat to ale gravy. Loved that they gave extra gravy in case you’re a gravy fiend!
Cracking selection of real ales. Dined for a Sunday Roast. We had the beef and chicken, both very good and portion sizes were healthy. Also had the scotch egg starter - bit on the salty side. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area at the weekend.
