Excellent family run pub with hard working staff.
Usually 4 real ales plus ciders, stouts and lagers.
Excellent basic menu (burgers, hotdogs, fries, salads etc) with veggie options.
Superb looking coffees and ice cream sundaes.
Basic interior, stone floor, wooden chairs, a few throws here and there all creates a relaxed atmosphere.
Dog friendly.
Hiking boots friendly.
Welcoming solid fuel stoves in winter, cool inside in summer.
Proper country pub!
Can be VERY busy during the day and early evening at holiday times and weekends.
We have been going since it first opened, one of our favourite locals!
If you want plush interiors and extensive (or expensive) menu it's probably not for you.

Lovely family pub with brilliant customer service and every week different ales. They have absolutely delicious pork pies there. That doesn't mean that anything else isn't good. Yes it is and it is great. Just come and enjoy

One of my favourite pubs in the UK. Great burgers, cool craft beers on tap, beer for takeaway, funky decor. What's not to love? Highly recommended. NOT your typical country pub.

Stumbled across The Old Dog on my way back from Dovedale stepping stones. What a lovely place, staff were attentive, food was delicious and not too long a wait for it to be served. Nice to see that dogs are welcome inside, and the ones I saw were on their best behaviour!

Great food and atmosphere, only problem is it is really close to Thorpe cloud and the stepping stones so it was very busy at the weekend. And they don't take bookings. Would be perfect if just couples or maybe small group but went with around 10 of us and it was very cramped around one table. I've heard it's not so busy during the week though! Plus side is they accept dogs!! The toilets are really posh too!
