The Kingfisher Kitchen at Castle Espie

About

Great food by nature.

Story

Nestled in a quiet corner on the North West shore of Strangford Lough at WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre, the Kingfisher Kitchen is a hidden gem with unrivalled and uninterrupted views of the nature reserve’s lake across to Scrabo Tower.

Throughout the week, we serve home-cooked hearty breakfasts, seasonal specials, light lunches, Castle Espie classics and afternoon teas.

We’ve also hand-picked a selection of quality fair-trade coffee and teas, plus a great range of refreshing soft drinks. They’re the perfect match for our signature scones, tempting tray bakes, moreish muffins and homemade cakes and tarts.

There are lots of menu options for little ones, child-friendly facilities, a soft play area and plenty of room for buggies too.

After enjoying the Kingfisher Kitchen, you can round off your visit by exploring the tranquil Sensory Garden and the Castle Espie Gallery, which are also admission free.

Basic food, a bit pricy but perfect for my elderly mother, and the view is great.
One thing I’ve noticed, the staff have great taste in music and I often come away having heard a great album in its entirety. I’ve shared some really decent music chat that’s kept me going on Spotify for the week. They could do a side hustle in local radio. Cracking views from the cafe, a great space for a sit down after leisurely walk.
I'm a frequent visitor to Castle Espie which I love but what once was a lovely cafe has become extremely disappointing, selection of food is minimal and what they advertise is never available. Unless you want a cup of tea and a traybake you can't expect much else
I visited Castle Espie on Fri 8th Oct. We had a friend visiting from Dublin who recently broadcast a radio interview on the importance of seagrass for the Brent geese. My friends & I thought Castle Espie would be wonderful for her to visit. We had 'lunch in the cafe and I was so embarrassed at what was on offer. She had a toasted sandwich which was served in a paper bag and she had to open out the bag to serve as a plate. I had to do the same with the wheaten bread I was served with my soup. Our water was served in plastic tumblers...a glass would have been much nicer, especially when both need to be wash. Our coffee was served in a disposal cup which when instructions followed folded into what I can only describe as a child's sippy cup. I know all the products seemed to be compostable which I congratulate but giving how covid restrictions are lifting and places are trying to get back to normal I found this method of serving food a disgrace. Why have they not gone back to ceramic which are easily washed...are they too lazy? I use to be at Castle Espie on a regular basis when my children were younger and I do think the whole wildfowl experience is fabulous but I won't be back to the cafe any time soon neither will my friends. The cafe could make a good profit for the trust but not under these conditions. I know the up to date guidelines on serving food and the cafe is very out of date!! I would like to add that we didn't find any sanitiser as we entered the building, there was a bottle behind the till at the cafe...out of reach from customers...luckily a few of my friends had some in their bag. It seems like 2 extremes here. We were pleased to find hand sanitiser at the tills to pay for the visitor experience. I do feel how the cafe is being run reflects badly on the trust.
Had friends up from Dublin so went for a walk & planned on having coffee & a catch up. The staff serving us were so rude. It was as if we were putting them out by being there. We were told the kitchen wasn't open as the staff deserved their break when we asked to order food. When my friend asked for chocolate on her cappuccino she was told she'd already been offered it if she'd been listening. Not a nice way to spend a sunday morning. Drank our coffee & left!!!!
My mum sister and I went for lunch this week. First time we had been. The food was lovely and the staff were so frendly and helpful!!! Def recommend it for a lovely day out. Views are beautiful!!! We will def be back
Food was good, shame about the service, was a little chaotic, though some of the staff seemed to be first day there, a confusing till/order process and a bus load of pensioners didn't help. Great views from pretty much every table in the cafe area
What lovely staff! So pleasant and helpful. Fresh tasty food and wonderful views of the lough with such a variety of ducks and geese.
Lovely restaurant atrached to the gift shop in castle Espie. Good choice of items on menu. Orientated for prams and children. Good views of birds and activities for the children
Straight forward menu offering a good selection of food from light bites to complete meals. Foods always great at a reasonable price and located in a beautiful part of the country.
