Story

A warm welcome is guaranteed at this long established family-run restaurant. The Imperial is renowned for its fantastic service and outstanding Chinese food. With its convenient location in Gateshead a visit to experience this fine restaurant is a must.

Guests can enjoy a drink from the bar while looking through our extensive menu. All our food is made with the freshest ingredients and all tastes are catered for.

To start there are plenty of delicious appetizers to choose from including our special Dragon and Phoenix soup, Chilli salt King Prawns, Chicken lettuce parcels and ribs in a variety of sauces of your choice.


The variety of main dishes is impressive and diners can decide from tender chicken, succulent beef or fresh juicy prawns to name a few. Vegetarians are well catered for too. All our dishes can be cooked with an array of tasty and aromatic sauces to accompany them; such as our sweet Cantonese sauce, traditional ginger & spring onion, and spicy chilli and salt.


The special crispy aromatic duck with pancakes and plum sauce is a popular choice with guests. Our waiters will be happy to recommend dishes for guests to try.

A speciality of The Imperial is the well-liked 3 course banquets. The set meals we offer can give diners the chance to experience a great mixture of dishes and flavours.

Been here dozens of times over the years and I can’t recall ever having a disappointing meal. On our last visit we had the Cantonese spare ribs which were to die for followed by the house special curry with egg fried rice which was delicious. You get lots of fresh prawn crackers on arrival which went down a treat. The atmosphere is very good although it was fairly quiet on our visit. Manager is a lovely, friendly guy who makes sure that everyone is happy with their experience. Beer and wine are reasonably priced and we are always offered a free liqueur at the end of the meal. Had a sambucca which was the perfect end to a very good night. Would highly recommend a visit if you haven’t been before.
The owner is a lovely gentleman who made the restaurant feel more homely. Service is fine otherwise, but they aren't very attentive to drinks. The banquet menus are quite good value. We went for the Royal banquet with some additions: - I don't understand why chicken and sweetcorn soup is a thing. - the ribs were OK but the sauce lacked depth. - the salt and chilli prawns were juicy and fresh. - the cantonese style beef was tangy and sweet, which doesn't work taste wise. Five thumbs down. - the crispy duck was dry - everything else lacked flavour so wasn't notable. All in all it's really good value for money, but very average.
Went as was told had a fully GF menu. Did not disappoint, lovely food, lovely, fast and polite service and a nice atmosphere too. Would 100% recommend. Especially if coeliac.Food: 5/5

Just love this Chinese restaurant, the food is lovely, the waiting staff couldnt have been more attentive or efficient, the venue is clean and the decor authentic. The only down side is the mountain of stairs to get to it, very steep and not so easy for anyone with mobility issues. Certainly no wheelchair access.Food: 5/5

Our first time at the imperial we chose the emperor banquet set meal for two I have posted a picture of what is included service was great speedy and attentive I wasn't keen on the soup but my wife enjoyed it all of the advertisers were very tasty but all three main dishes were far too sweet for our liking if we return we will ask for advice and choose something different unfortunately if you have a disability or elderly they are too steep flight of stairs up to the restaurant which may be a problem overall it was great experience and will return
