The Hand and Flowers

Story

The Hand & Flowers is a gastropub in Marlow, Buckinghamshire that opened in 2005. Owned and operated by Tom Kerridge and his wife Beth, it gained its first Michelin star within a year of opening and a second in the 2012 list, making it the first pub to hold two Michelin stars. It was named the AA Restaurant of the Year for 2011–12. Reviews from food critics have been mixed.DescriptionThe pub was purchased in 2005 by chef Tom Kerridge and his wife Beth, who ran the front of house. Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire on West Street, only a few doors down from where Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein. The pub gained its first Michelin star, and three AA rosettes in under a year.At the AA Restaurant and Hotel Awards 2011-12 the pub was named the AA Restaurant of the Year for England. The Hand and Flowers was upgraded to two Michelin stars in the 2012 list, the first time a pub has ever held two stars. Michelin Guide editor Rebecca Burr said of the The Hands and Flowers, "Tom’s cooking has risen to new heights. His dishes are sophisticated yet familiar and are a perfect match for the relaxed surroundings of his charming pub."After Kerridge appeared on the BBC television show the Great British Menu, he added his two winning dishes to the menu at The Hand & Flowers. Another item on the menu is a hot chocolate tart with cacao from the estates of Willie Harcourt-Cooze. Vegetarian dishes are usually created ad hoc as required, and rely on the invention of the chefs.

We had a really super time here on Thursday evening and found the service and staff to be excellent. The food was gorgeous and the whole experience was superb. Would like to mention the Espresso Martinis too as they were SO delicious. Kerry, Cristina and Bogdan were all great and the atmosphere was lovely. Thank you everyone! Will definitely come back.

Went for lunch today and echo many of the just OK comments others have said here. We both found the service pretty good. I feel the goal is somewhere between friendly pub and formal high end which worked fine for me. I had the pork belly which was very good although not sure what a piece of rhubarb adds to the dish but interesting nonetheless. My wife's dish was pretty disappointing-fish of the day with a reduced fish stock sauce which was so salty it was inedible and we sent back. They were very good in giving a different sauce but surprised they can send out the food as salty as it was. For dessert my wife had creme brule which was very standard but at £13.50 does not live up to price at all. Overall, it's OK but you can eat at Roast in London Bridge for less and better quality or Sakenohana for incredible food and wonderful restaurant experience for less money. Really wanted to love this but didn't meet expectations for us I'm afraid. Struggle to understand the Michelin start rating.

Very good food and excellent service. Loved it - but baulked at the prices a bit. Yep - I knew what they were beforehand and we could’ve had the set lunch, so I’m not complaining - but not convinced the prices are reasonable for the food. Having said that - we did enjoy it immensely! OK. One actual criticism. God I hated the track list on the sound system!

Amazing Michelin star pub food. Totally unpretentious with a really comfortable atmosphere. All of the staff are great and really welcoming. You will need to book in advance for popular times. The a la Carte menu is expensive but well worth it. There is also a set lunch Monday to Sunday.

What a fantastic experience. It was the perfect place to spend my 50th birthday evening. We were made to feel special all night. With great service and superb food it is a must. Yes it is on the expensive side. But wow what a lovely night. I even received a birthday card when the realised it was my birthday. Keep up the good work Tom. We'll be back !!!!!
