Not great. Food served in bowls, no silver metal bowls with heated trays. Chips were husks cooked several times. Food was mediocre. The poster with Islam as the surname is obviously working for this restaurant. Stock photos from a far nicer restaurant. There looks a nicer place 100m up the road
I have not used the 'New Gushan' for many years and thought that I would give it a try tonight. It was probably the worse Indian takeaway that I have had in 10 years in St Albans. Portion size very small, vindaloo sauce totally generic with no flavour and Peshari Naan bread basically a plain naan bread with a smear of sugar syrup. Phoned the restaurant and an extremely rude and unhelpful gentleman told me 'not his problem, talk to 'Just Eat''. Paul
Ate here for last time, Gulshan has gone way down hill in recent years, that’s the owners fault, hygiene rating hit rock bottom this year only managing a 1 rating from food standards agency, that tells it all, although it has now been given a 4? Rating. The food, quality, portions and service, are very poor, no heating in winter months, just an electric fire placed by your table, that’s because their heating system is broken, and has been for a very long time. Bad to say the least. And rumour is! It’s going to close. Not that I’m surprised. Their Prices have gone bananas! £6-25 for a side dish of Bombay aloo now??? Everything has gone way high since my last visit.
I can highly recommend the Gulshan, it’s without doubt my favourite Indian restaurant in the town centre. It might not be flashy inside but don’t let that put you off as the food is great, especially the Chicken Madras and garlic chilli naan.. Well worth a visit.Recommended dishesSamosa, Poppadom
Staff looked bored but I suppose as the place was deserted on a Tuesday evening it's hard for them to get enthusiastic, the person that set the table picked the cuttlery up by the ends you eat with, not impressive. lamb starter was a bit oily and tough however the chicken madras was pleasant enough and the roti was good. Crocks were looking old and whole place is a bit dated. Generally Ok but nothing special and a bit expensive.
Nice tasting food, not always hot temperature unfortunately. Good value, parking can be awkward. Service good. Part 2 Just returned after some time, mine and my wife's were sub standard the sauces were all over the place and the chicken was dry, needed a mouthful of beer to digest a Madras and a Dansak a couple of easy dishes you would of thought. When asked if everything was OK by the floor manager I started to explain he just walked off. Also there were two rowdy groups in whe wernt asked to keep it down. Wont be returning !!
Have given this place some good reviews last year, then the food standards gave a 1 rating for food and hygiene, a very poor rating, but not surprised, it's now managed a 4 rating, which it should have maintained all along, the food has been very poor on last three visits, quality, quantity, and portions just got smaller, no hot plates, no hot towels either, I have eaten here since Late 1970s, it's time to move on, no heating at all in the winter months, just a small electric heater placed by your table, that's not acceptable, you need to eat in comfortable surroundings, the owner hasn't got a clue, food became hit and miss each time we ate here, no wonder the rumour is its going to close, I'm not surprised to hear that, it was once one of the best curries in st Alban's, but not anymore, that's all down to its current owner/management and staff. Will never eat here again.
On my gap year I ventured across India trying the traditional delicacies from Mumbai to New Delhi my tastebuds were hit harder, so hard it reminded me of the punch I received when I tried to joyride my dear friend Andrew tates Bugatti. But nothing could ever compare to the sensation that filled me when I entered the new gulshan! An establishment opened 45 years ago passed down from grandad mr new gulshan to dad mr new gulshan and now with son mr new gulshan all those decades passing but the level has never dropped. As I scanned the venue on a prime Friday night my waiter attentively scanned the venue like a plus size model looking for lingerie that fits her in Victoria’s Secret. Luckily for us we were the only table in there! As I seductively stroked my glass of cobra I was greeted with a sensation I’d only found in the slums of punjab, this wasn’t a chicken tikka madras it was liquid heroin. I cried so much bossman had to get me another napkin he’d delicately folded into a swan the queen should arrest me cos I snapped that Swan and wiped away my sobbing sockets. My friend had the sea bass and I could tell straight away from the quality this wasn’t frozen rubbish from Iceland. Like 500 years of Indian tradition landed in St Albans. The best curry house in England - a must visit !
Really nice Indian restaurant. This place has been going since the seventies. Great food, good portions.
There was a large group of us 10 people and was expecting the service to be slow. Far from that. The drinks were served promptly the food orders came out all together which was delicious. The staff were engaging and made the evening pleasant. Really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be returning.
