Marcus Wareing's addition to the Renaissance is both plush and relaxed equally. High quality service as you'd expect from restaurants of this ilk and it didn't disappoint. Amazing staff, full COVID measures in place and we felt very safe and distanced from other diners but still managed to keep the opulent ambience. Food was incredible at every stage and they were able to accommodate our dietary requirements. The soup was delicious and i enjoyed the lamb croquettes. The sourdough is a delicious and generous portion of 8 slices! Steak was served with a very good green peppercorn sauce and the sea bream with lobster sauce with extra lobster meat was a stand out dish. If you love bone marrow, you are in for a treat, one of the few places that get it right, I'm still thinking about mine a few days later. All of the desserts looked great and the salted caramel tart and espresso ice were amazing. Staff were faultless. Lovely for a relaxed evening meal.
The restaurant is spectacular with a relaxed, intimate atmosphere with low light and jazz music that combines to enhance the moment. If I had to repeat the occasion I would do so with pleasure. The service was excellent, every time we had empty glasses, and without asking, they were full again thanks to the kindness of the waiters, attentive to our movements or gestures, something that we appreciated very much. I recommend The Gilbert Scott in London for any event, even if just to celebrate life itself. To summarise, each of us spent around 65 GBP, having asked for additional items. Perhaps we could have ordered more, but what we chose was more than enough for this occasion.
A beautiful setting for a sadly subpar Sunday lunch. On entrance in to the hotel it’s clearly a beautiful building, immaculately maintained, and a delightful place for a nice, more luxurious Sunday lunch. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and the other guests were all very nice and friendly. On arrival we were greeted well and taken to our table. We had two babies in our group and the staff were extremely accommodating and wonderfully nice, happy and enthusiastic. The set menu for Sunday lunch is £35 for 3 courses, and no option to do 1 or 2 courses. So we all had to go for the set menu. The wine list is rather pricey, but we found a nice Cotes Du Rhône for £35. I’d expect them to have had more reasonably priced bottles. The starters were lovely, and outshone the rest of the meal. I had the onion soup, with a lot of onions, served with a delicious gruyere on toast. The mackerel was tasty and well presented and my friend had the burrata which she finished with pleasant ease. So far so good. The mains arrived, meats individual and veg in sharing bowls, which is fine and sociable. I’d call it a “Roast of Two Halves”. The meats were mostly nice. The slow cooked Ox cheek was delicious - a really comforting, luxurious melt in the mouth delight. The chicken I’m told was also very nice. My wife had the beef, which she asked for medium rare. The parts that were medium rare were lovely, but parts of it were actually raw. So not edible. We couldn’t fault the gravy, it was thick, deep, and velvety. They gave us extra on request. The real problems, however, came with the vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. The roast potatoes were so over-cooked I could have used them as cricket balls. They must have been cooked and kept warm for a long time. Very disappointing. The Yorkshire puddings were also a bit over-cooked. The carrots were delicious, though. Broccoli - a tad odd, served with a mint sauce that isn’t too everyone’s taste. The dessert options weren’t very inspiring but we had to choose. I went for the profiteroles... not the kind of profiteroles you would expect, oh no. It was just one huge profiterole, served like an odd sandwich with an extremely sharp, sweet passion fruit and yoghurt filling. No thanks. It was not nice at all. It should be more clearly explained on the menu. The apple crumbles were massively over-cooked. The banana soft serve was probably the nicest. They also forgot our coffees and then served them lukewarm. Tut tut. All in all I’d say it was a disappointing experience, hence the 3 stars. Luckily we were with good friends and had a great time anyway. The staff were friendly and the setting is beautiful. Just a shame about the food.
Awful experience. Most of the staff are like robots with faces like they don't want to be at work. Starter was basically a bowl of salad leafs. Sides of bread and chips were very good. In the mains one of the diners found a large piece of tissue in their herb gnocchi. The desserts weren't the best. This experience was rectified by the duty manager, however despite this, Gilbert Scott is a definitely a no-go for me and my friends.
Please note - this is a review of the bar only having read the reviews of the restaurant it feels like it deserves a different rating. I would say that Sir Gilbert Scott bar is as Victorian as it gets in London - completely over the top, almost Russian in its unapologetic splendour this complement comes from a Russian. So if you’re up for some old style chic - this is your place. Cocktails are wonderful, snack food is not cheap, but certainly good value for money. Thanks! We’ll be back once again and again.
The service was outstanding but food was ok. They serve matching wine with every dish-worth trying with main course. Agreed with earlier review - tomato and ricotta starter has no flavour.
First class food and service. If you want a treat, this is the place. I had the octopus to start and wow was this a perfect dish and the next two courses followed in suit. I don't want to ramble but I'm a food man and this satisfied my every taste bud.
Beautifully presented, delicious food served in a beautiful building by lovely staff. I really enjoyed my lunch, it felt very special without being too formal. I especially liked how my 8 year old child was treated and how everyone at the table was served attentively. I highly recommend eating here. The set menus are comparable in price to a gastro pub in the countryside but a la carte is available too. I think you get excellent quality for your money here. The restaurants own photos are much more representative than the snaps from my phone.
The service was excellent. The surroundings are stunning. But the food didn't quite match the rest. Lots of it was really tasty but elements let it down. Eg The chips are mostly greasy 'scraps'. The potatoes dauphinoise was also poor. The salmon starter is like the opened a supermarket packet, cut it into rectangles and served for a nice mark up. The rosti with the pork was rock hard/inedible. It's not a cheap place so I've marked it lower than I would another less expensive place. Please note there's still good reason to go here. Just be judicious wth your choices.
I had my 18th birthday here in 2014 with my family at the chefs table. Wonderful experience, definitely something I'd recommend. Every course came with a glass of wine to match perfectly with the food we were eating. We had our own waiter who was very entertaining and with every course we had a chef tell us exactly what we were eating. The atmosphere is lovely and the bar is beautiful.
